You may want to check out a convenient location, & get your child to sit in a trial class? I've a P3 too, & we attend w@w - convenience, amongst others, is an important pull factor for us.

Would like to get some advice/help on ideation on p6 compo plot.
In the compo practices we do at home, my child (& me as well!) has problem generating ideas for the plot based on theme + pic.
He used to attend a reputed centre but stopped after p6 term 1 (this yr)…and we have gone thru videos/courses on how to do planning etc but when faced with the pic n theme, many times we can’t get a story with a reasonable decent PROBLEM n the plot.

Can someone advise what way to tackle this?

Would you be all to share if there is any structure to teaching primary school children creative writing. It is essential to have many good or bombastic words in the compo to score good grades? Also, do you conduct lessons for primary school children and at which level? Thanks.

There are different approaches with some commonalities. For lower primary, the focus is mostly on helping the children to gain basic language skills and proficiency in descriptive writing. For upper primary, the focus is more on narrative; this usually entails a plot mountain with introduction, rising tension, climax and resolution. For both levels, creative writing should be taught as an iterative process with plenty of rewriting and refinement.

Bombastic or purple prose is a big no. Such over-the-top language draws excessive attention to itself often to the point that the reader loses the thread of the content. Creative writing should be content-led, with vocabulary playing a supportive role only. Unfortunately, many tuition centres, teachers and tutors try to disguise their lack of ability to teach creative writing by resorting to the encouragement of bombasticity (I just made up this noun but it seems plausible).

Good words, however, are essential. By ‘good’ I mean words that are appropriate, precise and effective. For instance, it can be as simple as writing ‘wolfed down’ instead of ‘ate quickly’ or ‘sheepish’ instead of ‘embarrassed’.

Anyone previously was considering between Writers at Work and The Alternative Story for creative writing classes? Kiddo is now in P5 and has a good command of vocab but I believe that will not be good enough. I would like to stretch him further. My colleague briefly mentioned Indigo to me . Honestly, i am not aware that Indigo is known for writing classes.

What were your findings and what decision did you eventually make? Will really appreciate your sharing of experience, thoughts, views etc.

My son attended the writing camps for TLL and the Write Connection in

P3. He liked the TLL one better was he said it was more interesting. I’m looking for English writing camps ( as trying Not to fill up with too many classes during term time). If anyone has suggestions pls share!

I always thought Indigo was for JC. Ha ha if you try please share with us how it went. Anyway, both W@W and TAS have good reviews among my friends. Worth giving it a try.

In the end my ds settled on TAS because of timing and he liked the teacher. Their methodology is useful and there's also a dictionary of phrases to describe everything and my ds reads it before every exam. I suggest going for a trial to see which one suits your child better since every one has different learning styles. Holiday is a good time to try because once P6 starts next year it is a crazy rush until PSLE :siam:

Also I agree that having good vocab is not enough anymore. I did not want to have english tuition at first but I struggled trying to help my ds with writing as I don't write well. He is quite a bookworm but some how it does not translate into his writing...
