Maris Stella High School does not offer the Normal (Academic) or the Normal (Technical) stream. Student who fail to meet the promotion criteria may have to seek transfer to another school which offers these streams.

There is minimum criteria to meet to continue to do HMT at the next level. To be eligible for Higher Mother Tongue (HCL), students should obtain a minimum of 50% for HCL at Sec 2. Otherwise, just check with the Teachers to see if they will still let you continue HMT at Sec 3 if you struggle at Sec 2 and pull down aggregate of other subjects when Sec 2 is an important year for streaming.
At the end of Sec 2 streaming,

      for Higher Chinese (HCL) students,

apart from just looking at one single-subject Sec 2 HCL performance, cum Standard Chinese performance, doesn't MS High need to examine the students' overall average percentage, as well ?

      E.g.

what is the minimum overall percentage required, before end-of-Sec 2 students allowed to continue proceed with Sec 3 HCL,

      in case

the school doesn't want students to struggle with HCL, at the expense of other core, important fundamental, underlying O-level subjects?

      because

each of the components, inside O-level (HCL) : to do well, to master, need to spend a substantial amount of time on. Question is, do you (student), have the time ?

Whether your son’s chance is high or not, depend on the following condition (situation)

            1) Total,
how many 2020 P6 students offered Maris Stella CO (confirmed offer), will give up their CO?

If nobody give up any CO, means zero chance for Wait-list conversion.

Maris Stella High (MS) is not an ordinary affliated school. MS is a "Full" school, meaning that even though the Secondary (boy) school students have never studied in Maris Stella primary before, however one day, their future off-spring, many years later down their life journey, can still come back and be enrolled into MS primary school. As such, "Full" schools are highly popular in hot demand, during P1 registration time.

            2) In the event that,
there are some pupils who have given up Maris Stella High CO, then whose Wait-list gets converted first, will depend on the internal ranking of these WL candidates’ position.

Who is holding this Wait-list of ranking ?
The panel of interviewers, (decision makers) inside MS. Only they know who are ranked first, and who are ranked later, go down the list, one by one.

Students who are ranked high, at Top of the WL, will get converted first. Their chance, is high.

In contrast, those who are ranked low, right at bottom of the WL, may not be converted.

            3) on that day in November, when 2020 PSLE results are released and P6 students go to school to collect their results, they will know whether their Wait-list has been converted or not.

If converted, these successful DSA recipients cannot participate in S1 MOE posting anymore.
Otherwise, if not been converted, Wait-list pupils will proceed to choose 6 Secondary schools, for S1 posting, based on their Tscore.
This covid year, being the last exiting Tscore batch.

            Thus,
            due to uncertainty in conversion,
students on Wait-list, do (please) continue to focus on preparing for your coming PSLE. At the end of the day, your Tscore still counts, for Sec 1 admission.
DSA is not the main entrance door.

In the event, Wait-list gets converted, Congratulations !

Otherwise, enter by Tscore, the main entrance door for admission.

            =======================

            In your case,
if there are students who given up (reject) MS CO, and if your son’s Wait-list ranking is high, then, the chance of getting converted is high.

            E.g…

If there is some one given up MS
CO and your son is ranked #1 inside the Wait-list, then he will be the first one to be converted.

            Or

            Put it another way

If let’s say your son is ranked, say, #4 inside the Wait-list, that means need 4 candidates to turn down their COs, before can reach your son’s turn, to be converted.
But, if say, only 3 candidates with CO turned down MS COs, Sorry, your son will have to enter by PSLE Tscore admission entry path, instead.

Is there any weekly chapel that the students need to attend?

Also are there any school bus services from Bedok?

The general public view is that MSHS is a good school. Boys are generally well-behaved. The highest scorer for the Sec 1 batch in 2020 is 255. COP (non affi) is 239 up from 237 in prior year. Principal is strict. 9 classes of Sec 1 this year totalling about 310 in sec 1 intake. Affiliated COP is 226 but I believe some of those who DSA in may score lower. Students generally aim for JC. School offers HCL to everyone if they score at least an A in PSLE even though they don't take HMT in P6. It is one of the few schools in SGP offering the CLEP. A good school to consider

Won’t the boys struggle with HMT if they did not do HMT in primary school in P6 ?

Sec 1 Chinese increased in difficulty from primary Chinese. Sec 1 Higher Chinese is comparable to JC standard. Even though the boys study HCL, they have to take O levels MT in Sec 3 and O levels HMT in Sec 4. I wonder why no parents question MOE the vocabulary words in Secondary MT and HMT Chinese are totally different and yet they kept saying if you take HMT, you will know MT.

Even if one is offered to do HMT in Sec 2 because can get high 80 plus for Sec 1 MT, can still fail HMT in Sec 2 and will struggle. This is a true story from another Sec sch case.

                    1)

                    Yes, that part about
\" if you take HCL, then assume you will know your Standard Chinese (bu-hua), this part really puzzled me. How can they make such a sweeping statement, knowing jolly well that

                    in Secondary schools,
if take HCL (gao-hua), Teacher never even teach u any single chapter from the bu-hua textbook, definitely HCL students will lose out Total of 96 chapters of bu-hua vocab during 4 years from Sec 1 to Sec 4, because
HCL teachers only teach gao-hua textbooks, totally omit out teaching bu-hua textbooks whatsoever.

In fact, I think Chinese Teachers in Secondary schools have a more \"senang\" (easier) life, compared to primary schools' Chinese Teachers.

In Upper primary, our P5 / P6 HCL laoshi all very hardworking, on the ball type.
                    Why ?

                    because

they do teach (P5 & P6) HCL students intensively, both (gao-hua and bu-hua) textbook vocab (ci yu) concurrently. Both set of text books, they taught thoroughly to prepare students for Psle HCL well. But come to Secondary school, totally opposite scenario.

                    2)

You mentioned that there are students who scored high 80+ in MT, yet failed HMT in Sec 2 and struggled\" -

                    Yes, not surprised because

there is a gap difference between CL and HCL in the expectations of writing zuowen (choose 1 to write, out of 3 choices) , in Chinese Oral, in the many more \"cheem\" vocab encountered, as well as in the way students answered the open-ended \"li jie wen da\"

                    For the zuowen section,
out of 3 choices or category given, often students choose one that they are most familiar with, because got \"meat\" or some bullet points to write about. Much substantial amount of time is spent on reading up Chinese articles. If student dont bother to read widely, the pupil's brain database inside is empty tank (blank).

                    The same, for HCL Oral.
If never read up enough, when they posed u an Oral question, can be tongue-tied, mind went blank, panicked until become stoned, don't know what to say in front of the Oral invilgilator. In the end, failed Oral.

Depend on that HCL (O-level) exam day itself,
what kind of Chinese Oral question are u given ? Some are common sense type, on the spot where can think on your feet.

                    Example

There has been cases reported about employers in Singapore abused their maids hired. What's your opinion or view about this ?

                    In your Oral reply,
acknowledge that Yes, u are aware that such things are happening in Singapore. Student cannot argue that No, no such case exists, because evidence is there, it appeared in newspaper report every now & then. This is a fact, unlike those argumentative zuowen where pupil can argue his stand, based on critical-thinking supporting analysis reasons provided.

By the way, have you read this recent newspaper article below ?

Maid abused by her employer, escaped desperately by climbing down 15 floor below

                    https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/woman-admits-abusing-maid-climb-15-floors-escape-slap-spit-13155700

But other kind of Chinese Oral question given, may not be so easy nor straight forward, tricky. Depend on which batch (year) of HCL (Oral) exam you sat for
