Hi fellow parents, our daughter did well for her PSLE, and we're in the fortunate position of having to choose between MGS, RGS and NYGH for her. Our initial thoughts are below, but any further advice and personal experiences on these 3 schools will be much appreciated please!

          MGS
Pro: close to our home (we stay near Beauty World MRT)
Cons: we are personally not too convinced by IB vs the more traditional A-levels, but I admit this is also partly due to our lack of familiarity with IB, so will have to read more on it over the next couple of days

          RGS
Pros: prestige/reputation/network associated with the Raffles family/alumni; by most accounts, top-quality facilities, educators, all-round education
Cons: distance from our home (estimated 45-60 mins by public transport); high-pressure environment (?)

          NYGH
Pros: relatively close to our home; comparable to RGS on the quality of education
Cons: we are concerned (rightly or wrongly) that the environment at Nanyang might be a little too homogeneous; as compared to MGS/RGS where perhaps the culture/environment is a little more diverse (we could be stereotyping?)

          Thanks in advance!

Although northEAST got east, it’s not really East.

And frankly, what does in the East mean?

He has a good chance to enter RI based on his 259 score (refer past 5 years COP below). However, as COP fluctuates from year to year, there is a chance that RI COP is higher or equal than 259 for 2021 intake.

Should have no issue qualifying for Dunman High based on his 261 (259+2) score (refer past 5 years COP below). Dunman High COP has never reach 261 (based on COP since 2007).

                  All the best! :rahrah:

Seeing the list above, I think my DS t-score 255 doesn’t stands a chance at all for RI. With 255+3 HCL, Can I try HCI as first choice? He wanted to try 1st RI, 2nd HCI. 3rd Dunman High / NJC.

                  Appreciate advices. Thanks!

                  :congrats:

There is no harm putting RI as first choice even though the chance is very low (RI lowest COP is 256 in 2015).

Can put HCI as 2nd choice. His chance for HCI is about 40% based on his 258 (255+3) score (refer past 5 years COP below).

Almost a certainty that he can get into Dunman High based on his 258 (255+3) score (refer past 5 years COP below).

His chance for NJC is low based on his 255 score (refer past 5 years COP below). However, if he prefers NJC than Dunman High, he should put NJC as 3rd and Dunman as 4th.

As COP fluctuates from year to year, please put very safe choices for the 5th and 6th.

consult your son, which school is he interested to join, come Year 5 ?

                    Schools located, in the east

                    1) go Chung Cheng High (Main), if want affliation to Nanyang Junior College

But in CCH (Main), they are concerned over Chinese.

All students study HCL, from Sec 1. This is wonderful, of course !

                    But,
at Sec 3 after sit for O-level (Standard Chinese)

                    a) if you clinched a minimum (A1 or A2 or B3) in your O-level (Standard Chinese), then proceed in the immediate following year Sec 4 to take O-level (Higher Chinese).

                    b) But in Sec 3, if you scored (B4 or C5 or C6) in your O-level (Standard Chinese), considered not an ideal grade, school will request you to re-sit for Standard Chinese one more time, give you a a second chance to improve your grade
, in the following year Sec 4, in case you need Standard Chinese as one of your subjects to compute your L1R5, for admission into Junior Colleges.

However, you are not allowed to take O-level (Higher Chinese) in Sec 4.

                    2) go Victoria (O-level), if want affliation to VJC.

All Sec 4 O-level Victoria students, are affliated to VJC.

                    3) go Anglican High, if want affliation to St Andrew Junior College.
