1)
HCL is compulsory for All IP students in Catholic High (SAP school)
At end of Sec 4,
All IP students sit for O-level (HCL) exam.
All IP students,
no need to sit for O-level (bu-hua) in Sec 3, because they are destination bound for Eunoia Junior College, hence don't need to be bothered by this L1R5 thing.
2)
for O-level track CHS students, HCL is Not compulsory.
O-level students do have a choice.
a)
If Moe has already given your son the HCL eligibility letter, then he (in O-level track) can study HCL from Sec 1.
Three years later, in Sec 3,
he will take O-level (bu-hua) National exam first.
In Sec 4, the following year, then he take O-level (gao-hua) exam next, in the month of November, together with rest of all the other IP students inside the exam hall.
b)
But,
if your son didn't receive any MOE HCL letter, then he will proceed to study CL (bu-hua) in Sec 1, not gao-hua.
However,
when reach the end of his Sec 1 journey -
if O-level track students are keen & interested to study Sec 2 gao-hua, they can appeal to CHS Chinese HOD,
using their Sec 1 Report card (showing bu-hua CL results + overall results in other subjects as well including English, Maths, Science & best performance in Humanities subject). Out of 3 Humanities subjects, choose the best one

Apart from this HCL thing, two years later, for O-level track CHS students,
at the end of Sec 2 streaming year,
If they are keen to Transfer across to IP starting Sec 3, can approach Principal directly.
P will interview short-listed candidates for suitability, to join Sec 3 IP curriculum.
Once vacancies are released, because successful O-level students have Transferred across into IP, then
the other way round now,
end-of-Y2 students from the IP track who wish to Transfer back to OP quickly to prepare for O-level exam just in time for Upper (Sec 3 and 4) , because after attempted IP for two years, they find that IP doesn't quite suit them after all, they will grab these vacancies eagerly, after seats released by the O-level students who have transferred across successfully into IP (Sec 3).
As you know,
the O-level seats in CHS, are very precious.
Why precious ?
because
every year, at end of Sec 2 streaming, there is a lot of movement
- not just internally within CHS from different OP and IP track only,
- but also from external students studying in other schools locally also seeking transfer into CHS. These pupils can be from any local Sec school.
- as well as students from Asean countries also seeking Transfer in, concurrently.

If you really want to do Sec 1 HCL, but Don't qualify because MOE didnt give that eligibility HCL letter, there are a few ways to go around it
1) join those SAP schools that overide MOE HCL letter
Example
Join SAP schools like Chung Cheng High (Main), because their Chinese Department has overiden the MOE letter, enabling ALL Sec 1 students to take Higher Chinese.
Even if students never received MOE letter, never mind. All can take Higher Chinese from Sec 1 onwards, once joined CCH (Main)
Note
I mentioned join CCH (Main), never said join CCH (Yishun), because Yishun is not a SAP school. CCH (Yishun) branch, their Chinese Department never override Moe HCL letter.
2) if your girl join other schools , next year Y2021 Sec 1, continue to take external tuition in Higher Chinese outside, try to reach your targeted objective. That is
- by end of Sec 1,
try to score minimum grade A1 (75 marks & above) in your Standard Chinese (bu-hua)
- by end of Sec 1,
try to achieve minimum grade A (comprising either A1 or A2) in your Sec 1 both (Maths & Science) & minimum a B3 in your English language.
- Then, after Sec 1 year-end exam over, approach your Chinese HOD personally & appeal to let your daughter take HCL, starting from Sec 2 onwards.
The reason why, your other Sec 1 subjects (Eng, Maths, Science) must also be strong, not just your bu-hua stand alone one single Chinese subject strong only, is because for Secondary HCL, you need to spend time reading up zuowen (yi lun wen, ji lu wen, qing jing zuowen, debate argumentative type of zuowen), read up newspaper cut articles, listen to Chinese radio news current affair, etc. Otherwise, if u don't spend time reading, when zuowen ask you to comment and give your view or opinion whether you agree or u dont agree with the zuowen topic, u got no \"meat\", no substance to support your \"argumentative\" essay, which come in by Sec 2 AFTER end of Semester 1

If that's what you mean, then the cut off point in 2019 was 152 (the lowest number in that aggregate range).
If your child scored 180, then will almost certainly get in with room to spare. But you may want to choose another school with a 180+ as your first choice, 179 as second choice, etc. Unless you really love this \"152\" school like it's literally next door to your house. -

Hi Experts here, someone mentioned that MOE/schools would kind of refer to the order of listing as reference should child request for transfer sometime down the road of 4 years due to whatever reasons, is this true?
I'm trying to be as realistic as possible.... my child had done well for this ONE time assessment. It could be just a fluke due to some last minute booster classes he had attended resulting in induced/inflated result, thought he's quite hard working. Well, there is a possibility that he cmi in a challenging environment as he came from a holistic neighborhood school.
Hehehe... I may be worrying too much but would greatly greatly greatly appreciate adv from some experts here🙏🏻
Ps: DC tscore 270+2, putting HCI as 1st choice
What is this, Congratulation! Your DC is scoring 270. So high....Do you know that not so many kids able to get this even though they tried very hard? For now, nothing to worry about lah... You can always choose lower cut off school (to many of us, still very high) if you think your child is not going to try very hard in HCI..... which you will not do so, right? Once again, have a wonderful Dec holiday,... while many of us still waiting patiently to 22 Dec to get our posting results. -

For those scoring 234 and above.
Will strongly recommend Xinmin Secondary (XMS).
Especially for those staying north east area.
Serangoon,Hougang ,sengkang and punggol.
Smaller cohort of only 4 Express class which is 130-150 students.
As compare to full Express stream school of 240-300 students per cohort.
Xinmin secondary is an autonomous school.
High % eligible for JC.
2019 90.36%
2018 93.8 %
2017 91.7%
2016 93.8%
Which compute into 9 in 10 Express stream students qualify for JC.
Another significant factor is XMS offers triple science class. Which greatly enhanced
Students chances entering JC science stream.
Note: XMS is among few autonomous schools that offers triple science.
