What did you get for your HCL in PSLE?
Thank you so much. I didn’t receive the eligibility letter but the official MOE website stated that the top 10% of PSLE cohort is eligible for HCL? I’m very confused as I am in the top 10% of the PSLE cohort.
If you don't get to take HCL in Sec 1, yes, you will still have chance to take HCL in Sec 2, based on your Sec 1 results. -
I didn’t take HCL in primary school.

I got an A for Chinese. Would it be recommended if I ask the school through email on the minimum results during sec 1 for me to take up HCL?

If you didn't take HCL in PSLE, you need to score A* for Chinese and be in the Top 10% of the cohort in order to be eligible to take HCL in secondary school.

At the end of Sec 1, after your results are released, your Chinese teacher will notify you if you are eligible to take the selection test. If you meet their requirement in your selection test, you will be allowed to take HCL in Sec 2. -

I thought it was a) Top 10% or b) Top 30% and i) A* in CL or ii) Distinction/Merit in HCL?

I also would have thought Nan Hua High put everyone in HCL in Sec 1 regardless of PSLE score/HCL background given SAP status (fully acknowledge this could be wrong)?
Who can take it
Students in the top 10% of the PSLE
Students in the top 30% who score an A* in Mother Tongue Language, or a Merit in HMTL
Schools will also have the flexibility to allow students who do not meet the above criteria to offer HMTL, if they are assessed to have exceptional ability in MTL and are able to do HMTL without affecting their performance in other subjects -
No, different
Nan Hua operate in the same identical manner, as St Nick and Catholic High, but in opposite contrasting manner from Chung Cheng High (Main), although all these 4 schools are SAP.
What’s their difference, amongst these SAP schools ?
Because
Chung Cheng High (Main) Chinese Department is kind, overided all their students HCL eligibility. That is, whether CCHM students received the Moe eligibility letter or no Letter, never mind, is all right, just let all her Sec 1 students take HCL. No letter ? Never mind, come on board, welcome u to join us for HCL. This is the stand and decision made, by CCHM School.
But,
Nan Hua, St Nick, Catholic High ! How do these three SAP schools function, operate ? You received from MOE any HCL eligibility letter, or not ?
If Yes, received, good, ok, can proceed to take Sec 1 HCL !
If No, didn’t receive, Sorry hor, one year later, at the end of Sec 1, come back to see me again with your overall Sec 1 results (report card). We will re-assess you, one year later.
Different schools :
different stroke, in how they want to handle HCL -

Just curious, did you get the Eligibility Letter for Foreign Third Language (German, French, Spanish, Japanese), as this is also tied to Top 10% of PSLE (and citizenship requirements but this should not apply for HCL).
Thank you.
For clarity, the Eligibility Letter was on the backside of the instructions for the S1 Option Form (includes eligibility for HMT and Third Languages).
The other possibility I can think of is if you scored 252 but due to decimal place/rounding it was not exactly Top 10% (and hence need A* for CL). -
