About 85 to 90% in RI take 4 H2s.

Local Autonomous Universities select applicants largely based on their University Admission Score (UAS):-

GP + PW + 3 H2 + 1 H1 (maximum of 90 Rank Points)

A student who cannot manage 4 H2s usually drop one H2 to H1 after promo exams at end of Y5.

However, there are also students who opted for 3 H2s at beginning of Y5 even though they are strong in academics.

with H1 maths, GP and PW. I Think it’s very rare. And he is not really weak academically

The popular subject combinations are PCME and BCME (Physics/Biology + Chemistry + Maths + Economics). However, there are quite a number of students who are taking other subject combinations.

Yes, there are some academically strong students who opt for 3 H2s and 1 H1.

For students who are taking 4 H2s, their weakest H2 subject will be considered as H1 during applications to Local Autonomous Universities (refer below).

GP + PW + 3 H2 + 1 H1 (maximum of 90 Rank Points)

If applying to local university, it is actually more advantagous to focus on 3 H2s than on 4. Especially if he is not confident of getting the same grade at H2 as for H1. E.g. getting an A at H1 is \"worth\" more for application purposes than a B at H2.

The downside is that perhaps it can be seen as not being very motivated if he is applying for a scholarship. But he can explain that away if he has strong time-consuming interests somewhere else - sports, music, community service etc.

For overseas universities, I believe that 3 A levels is considered fine except for some very competitive ones (e.g. Oxbridge). And the US universities don't care as they will look at SATs etc.
