hi,
Hi, my child is going to Sec one next year. Based on her p5 results, she shd be able to get into Nan Chiau. However, she doesn’t like CL and she doesn’t take HCL. Would the nan Chiau envt be ok for her based on your own experiences? We stay in Punggol. So in terms of distance, this is a better choice.
based on my personal experience since my child is in this school, she is taking hcl too without taking it in primary school, so yes there is a certain level of difficulty for her but she tried her best. Chinese isn't her best subject in primary school either. But she survived her O level Chinese with an A1, which i think the school has done a good job in cultivating her love for Chinese after she entered the school. She never read Chinese story book in primary school but since the school has Chinese session in the morning, like 2-3 days, she pick up this habit and asked me to purchase since lower secondary. So, it really depends on how you look at it. Now i am happy that she reads and speak better mandarin, we are Chinese after all. Having said that, her friends speak in English mainly so its not like the school is super Chinese, they do celebrate Chinese festivals and the current principal is pretty encouraging in kids wanting to try to do hcl. I am staying near the school so yes, we picked the school based on the distance as well and not just the cop. Let's say, if your child do not take HCL, i think CL cannot be avoided too even if she goes to another school? Might as well go to a school that might help to cultivate her love for Chinese...hahah ok, just my own opinion as i believed the environment might shape or change the child in a positive way? -

You might want to take the new AL into consideration that she will be ranked behind kids of similar AL but with HCL when she chooses a sap sch.

+ The fact that ranking of school choices matters in the new system.
Having said that, Olevels HCL is a totally different ball game from psle HCL but the kids cannot dislike Chinese lah.
The 2 bonus points from HCL can be gained from other subjects instead of focusing too much effort & time on passing HCL.
Btw, nchs ex P is now in Chung Cheng Yishun & it is affiliated to nyjc -
Child’s like or dislike of a subject especially Chinese - can change quickly over night.
Especially when they have a good environment and teachers that will make Chinese or any other subjects fun.
So no worries about it.
Put it another way- the school Chinese department and the teachers are more worry that the students are not doing well (enough) than you (and the students)…

Thanks for the encouraging words. Whilst she says she doesn’t like CL, not hate, she did well enuf to be offered HCL. So there is a chance she will do fine. Hopefully there will be a virtual open house at least, so she can see for herself the school environment.

Well done!
I am sure she will enjoy the environment there.
The school is rich in Chinese Culture - and your girl will be very immerse in it…
Soon … you will find her singing Mandarin Pop songs… (besides the K pop)…
Cheers!

The following is on NCHS YouTube channel from Dec 2020. Video is quite long (2 hours) but may give you a sense of the school.

Around the 1 hour 15 minute mark (+/-) there is a fair amount of discussion on the Sec 3 subject offerings. Compulsory subjects include EL, HCL, Math, A Math, SS + Elective Humanities, and Chem. Seems that all students take HCL, Pure Sciences, and both Maths in Sec 3 with some changes on a case by case basis in Sec 4.

My colleague’s daughter went in with psle score. This year sec 2. The colleague mentioned that the teachers in his daughter’s classes do not care whether or not you hand in homework. So most students in his daughter’s class do not bother with homework. Which he feels is not good. Of course we do not know what the situation is in other classes.

:yikes: What's the point of giving homework if you are not going to mark it. Sounds more like recommended \"readings\"
