All About Aircon (New, Maintenance, related components)

I used to have 3 split units, National also I think and after 3 years still good, 2 of which commonly used.
Now I have Daikin, also pre-installed. First 5 years ok, then 2 started to leak, 2 rotating motors for the vent out of order, 1 had to change the motherboard, then compressor also changed piping and themister…chemical wash twice…everything happened in the second 5 years. But all these years we have yearly maintenance contract. Is this normal? -
Our ac guy recommended other brands to us, told us not to take Daikin.
We currently have Panasonic. Find it very good. My parent’s place also using the same model. Cools the room very quickly and my electrical bill is not sky high though we on the aircon almost the whole day. -
We are using Toshiba. It is only 1.5 yrs old. The unit in our room leaked and we realised that it could be the way the piping was run.... sorry layman... something to the effect that my contractor probably did not slant the pipe enough so the water would backflow back.... We do have this probably once in a while.
For our old house, the developer installed Mcquay. It served us well for 8 years. It is currently tenanted out to a american couple who turns on the aircon 24/7. Last year they called us saying that our living room unit \"rained\" when the wife was out fetching the hubby from the airport.... So our false wall,etc... at that area was soaked with water. The other contractors came with quotes that need to heck off the false wall to enable easy servicing,etc... but we called in the guy who has always done it for us. We supposed he got it fixed with all the chemical wash,etc..... so now our tenant is using that guy for servicing as well. :xedfingers: We've not heard anything hopefully.... it is fine now. But we supposed when they leave, we probably need to replace the units due to their super heavy usage. :!:
My mum's house also using panansonic and so far so good. -
I am also using Toshiba currently. It’s about 7+ years already and a 3-room split unit. Only two are used every night while the other one only once in a while. So far so good touch wood. I’ve had it chemical cleaned once only. The rest of the time general cleaning on an adhoc basis, once a year.
Does anyone know what’s the average lifespan of an aircon? From what I’ve read here, no one has had their aircon for more than 10 years. Is the lifespan about 7 years? I would dread having to change the whole thing cos a colleague of mine recently had her 3 room split unit changed and it took two technicians and a whole day! -
Hi, how long do you service your aircon?
Everytime I tried to use , it was not cold at all.
the last service is around 4-5 mths ago and i had just use only twice after servicing. And now it was not cold at all. Anyone had this experience before? Anyone use portable aircon ? It is effecient? -

otherwise you can try to turn off everything, take out the plug wait for a few minutes and turn on the air con again. if its not cold, you should call the guys who service your aircon earlier. -
I am not sure of the leakage. How to check the leakage ?
Thanks -

I hv a similar prob.I am not sure of the leakage. How to check the leakage ?
Thanks
The aircon serviceman topped up the gas (sth like coolant) into the compressor after he measured the compressor with a gadget. He confirmed the compressor only had 50% gas.
Also there are two rows (inside the fan coil unit) that are not cold when the aircon is operating. He said I might need to change the whole unit soon.
So now, we set the temp at 23 deg C, sufficiently cold to cool the room. Not sure how long the unit can last.
The fan coil is also quite noisy. The thermostat on and off at shorter intervals compared to normal intervals. -
I’m not an expert but have change several aircons now… :!:
Can’t tell really tell if there’s leakage though. best to ask the technician to measure. but sometimes, due to the temp or the surroundings (like mounting of the compressor) you may see some liquid or wet patch on part of the floor. It may also be the pipe. But its best to ask the technician to check it.
shurley,
we usually service the aircon twice a year. Did your aircon technician say anything about the compressor or things like that? i think you really should ask the technician to come back and service your aircon again and ask them to check thoroughly. if the technician had already topped up the gas but its at a low level now, then there should be a leakage. you may need to check on the coils or other parts.
Jennifer,
Sorry, but I think you may need to replace the aircon soon. -
Thanks. tree nymph but I think I had forget who the technician is now. That time they just come knocking at the door.
Do anyone know any reliable air con specialist?
Does that mean if we did not use the air con, the gas will still remain unless there is a leakage ?
