All About Aircon (New, Maintenance, related components)

I am also using Toshiba currently. It’s about 7+ years already and a 3-room split unit. Only two are used every night while the other one only once in a while. So far so good touch wood. I’ve had it chemical cleaned once only. The rest of the time general cleaning on an adhoc basis, once a year.
Does anyone know what’s the average lifespan of an aircon? From what I’ve read here, no one has had their aircon for more than 10 years. Is the lifespan about 7 years? I would dread having to change the whole thing cos a colleague of mine recently had her 3 room split unit changed and it took two technicians and a whole day! -
Hi, how long do you service your aircon?
Everytime I tried to use , it was not cold at all.
the last service is around 4-5 mths ago and i had just use only twice after servicing. And now it was not cold at all. Anyone had this experience before? Anyone use portable aircon ? It is effecient? -

otherwise you can try to turn off everything, take out the plug wait for a few minutes and turn on the air con again. if its not cold, you should call the guys who service your aircon earlier. -
I am not sure of the leakage. How to check the leakage ?
Thanks -

I hv a similar prob.I am not sure of the leakage. How to check the leakage ?
Thanks
The aircon serviceman topped up the gas (sth like coolant) into the compressor after he measured the compressor with a gadget. He confirmed the compressor only had 50% gas.
Also there are two rows (inside the fan coil unit) that are not cold when the aircon is operating. He said I might need to change the whole unit soon.
So now, we set the temp at 23 deg C, sufficiently cold to cool the room. Not sure how long the unit can last.
The fan coil is also quite noisy. The thermostat on and off at shorter intervals compared to normal intervals. -
I’m not an expert but have change several aircons now… :!:
Can’t tell really tell if there’s leakage though. best to ask the technician to measure. but sometimes, due to the temp or the surroundings (like mounting of the compressor) you may see some liquid or wet patch on part of the floor. It may also be the pipe. But its best to ask the technician to check it.
shurley,
we usually service the aircon twice a year. Did your aircon technician say anything about the compressor or things like that? i think you really should ask the technician to come back and service your aircon again and ask them to check thoroughly. if the technician had already topped up the gas but its at a low level now, then there should be a leakage. you may need to check on the coils or other parts.
Jennifer,
Sorry, but I think you may need to replace the aircon soon. -
Thanks. tree nymph but I think I had forget who the technician is now. That time they just come knocking at the door.
Do anyone know any reliable air con specialist?
Does that mean if we did not use the air con, the gas will still remain unless there is a leakage ? -
We DIY our aircon at home, so far, I have replaced a new one for my room unit after like 7 years.
1) I have a VAX vacuum cleaner (that has bagless and can vacuum water function). I would vacuum the water and the \"jelly\" once a month or two from the water drainage pipe. The pipe that usually run to your toilet, water would drip out from there everytime you on the aircon. This is to prevent water leakage at the room units.
2) From those DIY shop (eg. Vinmart) you can get those foam in a can. Just have to shake well, insert the long straw thing, open up your aircon unit in the room, remove the filter, spray the foam on the metal coil piece of thing. Spray on the whole metal coil piece. Then leave it for about 1/2 hr, use a damp cloth to wipe the metal coil piece and cover back your aircon and filter.
3) Wash the filter every month or when its dirty. Use a toothbrush to scrub off the dirt and rinse with water.
Hope the above helps.

Portable aircon needs a outlet for the hot air, else it would be much less efficient.
They would give you a big tubing for you to channel the hot air out, and need to find or construct a outlet the fit the tube, which in turn limit the portability of the aircon. -

I contact my aircon technician twice a year as we turn on aircon every night. Hubby will open the shutters to wash off the thick dirt on the net every week.I am not sure of the leakage. How to check the leakage ?
Thanks
My aircon leaks after 6 months...usually it means 'big wash' with chemical and topping up of coolant/gas.
We leave the aircon on at 25 degrees, turn it off when the kids sleep and turn on the fan. If the weather is too hot, I will wake up to switch on the aircon again.
