I am looking for a program to help my son with his focus and concentration skills. Is there any that you would recommend?

Came across this Powermind Intensive by Singapore Brain Development Centre - has anyone sent their children to this and can share your feedback?

      Thanks a lot!

          Hi,

Share the same experience with you on my P5 son. We did the pre-test with SBD few years back, when my son is P1-2, cost about $50. We did not sign up the course, is too expensive and time consuming. 2 years ago, he joined Mindmax (similar to SBD but cheaper), but show no improvment and furthermore he does not like it. Later last year, he attended taiji lesson. He love it and I think it does help. As a kaisu parent like me, he is also on chinese medication to help him ‘open the brain’ to be more forcus.

          Hope it helps.

My sister has a bad experience with Singapore Brain Development. When the kids did not improve in their focus they ‘blame’ the parents for not doing enough training at home. Push all the responsibility to the parents if the kids did not show any improvement. The teachers were not passionate. There was a time whereby one of main trainer ‘twisted’ his son’s hand just because he was fidgety during lesson. Get to know some parents even pull out their children from the training program without completing the course even though they have paid a bomb (6k plus). Hope all the parents out there will think twice before signing up the program with them…

You may try right heguru right brain training. I remember when my 1.5 yo joined heguru at the buangkok mrt station, his could only focus for about 15 minutes and start to get cranky which was very embarrassing for me in class. After enduring for half a year, he could endure for about 40 minutes which I thought was a huge improvement. I think the engaging teachers and fast-paced interesting class activities helped a lot.

Other than counselling, one possibility for helping children to improve focus and concentration is letting them to attend therapeutic play session.

                  What is therapeutic play service?
therapeutic play service is a method of helping children with behaviour and emotional problems to help themselves. Play is the child’s natural medium of self expression - it’s essential for development. It is providing opportunity for the children to ‘play out ‘ their feelings and problems with a therapeutic objective.

Who is therapeutic play service intended for?
therapeutic play service is suitable to help children who have difficulties in emotions (e.g., express feelings), conduct (e.g., follows rules), hyperactivity (e.g., attention), and peer (e.g., relationship with others) issues.

I am a trainee therapeutic play practitioner and offering free services for kids. Anyone out there who is concerned that your own kids have social, emotional and behavioural difficulties; I can send you the free screening test, then you fill up and send it back to me. I will share the results with you without obligation. It is up to decide whether you would like to try the therapeutic play service. Please pm me for more details. Thank you!

                    Dear pheurie,

There are many variables determining one's concentration and focus, such as introversion/extroversion, learning styles etc. but I would zoom in on some techniques that may or may not be effective. As I do not know the personality and learning style of your child, you would have to try these techniques with your child to assess which are effective.

All of these techniques can be combined in whichever ways you deem necessary and effective:

                    1. Get rid of distractions: Televisions, mobile phones, toys etc. that don't contribute to his concentration and focus at hand should be removed - at least for the period of time that your child is working. You can discuss with your child on this and stick to the same amount of time consistently so that your child knows what he or she is expected to do at a certain time, and for how long - with no distractions. Consistency develops discipline, which in turn leads to improving one's concentration and focus.

                    2. Journaling: While the first technique removes external distractions, journaling removes internal ones. Encourage your child to start a journal and write on it regularly. It need not be on a daily basis but there should be a minimum limit, such as three times a week. If your child is introverted, this habit should develop naturally. If not, some encouragement is required to build this habit. Rewarding your child in some ways for completed journal entries may help your child in developing this habit. Journaling enables one to write out one's innermost thoughts and draw out insights from within ourselves. Blogging is not as effective since one self-censors when one writes for the public. Over time, journaling is cathartic and often enables us to remove our concerns and worries - which in turn removes mental clutter and releases more mental space for us to focus on what we want to do.

                    3. Avoid multitasking: While multitasking is often encouraged in the workplace, it is in fact harmful to our brains (Multitasking: Mental Health Hurts If Doing Too Much At Once | Time). Over time, multitasking can compromise our concentration and focus. Have your child focus on one thing at a time. This requires a to-do list, with the items prioritised accordingly. When we work according to a to-do list, we learn to do things in a linear manner, one thing at a time. Over time, our concentration and focus will improve.

I hope what I have mentioned above is useful to you and your child in any way.

Here's wishing you and your family a great 2021! 🙂

                    Warmest Regards,
                    Patrick

Apart from what resilience has mentioned , some yoga techniques can improve concentration. Drinking winter melon juice daily helps to sharpen the intellect.
