Singapore Chinese Girls School (Secondary)
-
Hi phtthp,
In general I think most segments of the HCL paper cannot really be 'studied' for.
BTW I dropped you multiple emails - not sure if they ended up in your spam folder lol
There are quite a few SCGS girls who opt to drop HCL after Sec 2. -
Just wondering, is CL/HCL marks taken into account for Sec 2 streaming? Or do schools usually use L1 (which could be either English or Chinese) + other important core subjects?
-
The streaming criteria is not really made known to parents / kids.
To be honest, SCGS is very kind in that even special programmes such as BSP, is primarily interest driven. You don’t have to do well in HCL to qualify to participate in the programme.
If you are taking double science, your choice of Sci combination and Humanities (i.e. either History or Geog) is also primarily interest based. There isn’t any streaming per se.
The only thing you have to ‘qualify’ for is to read ten subjects (HCL is including in the average score to qualify to read ten subjects as they take average score). And if you wish to take triple science, there is one class and some kids may not get in. (There are only 4 IP classes in SCGS). -

When you say BSP is primarily interest driven, does that mean participation in the program is by application? So if I get 55% in HCL but I am very interested, I apply and I get it? Since it is interest driven.

Or is it by selection? Where students are first offered the program and they choose whether or not to participate in it based on their interest? -

I don't have the exact entry criteria to BSP, but the bar is not high. There are B-grade HCL kids in BSP (not sure about C graders as my DD did not apply). This is to the programme, but not the scholarship. Scholarship has its own criteria set by MOE. Participation in the program is by application - there are no stated criteria (though I would imagine if you are failing, you won't get admitted lol). There is no 'shortlist' to apply, so to say.

BSP (Bi-cultural studies program) is a subject on its own, pretty time consuming.
For students who are taking BSP, does SCGS school still allow them to do Triple Pure Sciences, or ask them to drop to Double Sciences instead ? -
Thought students applied for BSP is because they wanted the scholarship.
Why would students study BSP, without applying for the MOE (BSP) scholarship ? -

The “better” schools (apologise for lack of a better word) usually do not have specific criteria to study specific subject combinations. So there is no streaming criteria. Unlike some other schools that may impose things like min B4 to study xxx. I think for schools that have combine science and pure science, imposing such a criterion could be necessary. However, in the former, should demand exceed supply, I believe the allocation will be by merit, therefore a need for students to indicate subject combination choices in order of preference. If everyone is guaranteed what they want, then in the option form, there should be just one choice.

Just for records, L1 is either EL or HMT. CL is not L1. -

L1 is either EL or HMT - this applies to O levels entering JC. '

In both my son and daughter's schools, both EL and HCL are taken into consideration, whether it is for promotional criteria or average grades (either percentage, or MSG). You can't take one and omit the other for promotions/streaming.
My son's school does impose criteria for taking various combinations (i.e. Humanities, Biology as an additional subject, Computing as an additional subject, BSP, CLEP etc in addition to demand outstripping supply for selected programmes or courses. Not all programmes/courses have quotas.). -

In every school which offers the BSP, there will be students who elect not to take up the MOE BSP scholarship (even if they qualify) because they do not wish to commit a subject in JC. There are obligations for the scholarship and not everyone wants to read China Studies in JC as there are only 4H2 subjects one can read. Furthermore, some kids already have the ESIS or EESIS so the independent school fees may not be a huge issue and the monetary benefit of the BSP scholarship is not that much, actually. You can enjoy the full learning benefits of the programme by participating in it, but not being a scholarship holder.
