very sorry this one i am not sure cos my DD is in IP and took HCL so i didnt really pay attention to the options for O lvl or bu hua girls.

For IP girls, at end Sec 2 they choose their sciences, humanities, optional additional subjects, and one of four academies ( i think project work largely done with academies…so were some overseas trips pre covid) of which my DD picked liberal arts academy.

          Hi phtthp,

I just browsed the SCGS website which says that the BSP is offered to IP students.

I am not sure how large the class size is for BSP. I only know that my DD’s Sec 1/2 and current Sec 3 class, comprises 30 girls.

I don’t think BSP is a heavily subscribed option at SCGS - it certainly is interesting, but there are also other interesting pursuits like Art, Music, 3rd Language, or some will opt for Triple Science.

In my DS' school, you generally cannot take BSP with Triple Science.

For comparison with St Nicholas IP (since they go to EJC together with SC), among the usual combinations, one can take
            - triple Science, 3rd language, MEP, BSP.

No conflict and no need special approval, it is one of the offered subject combinations.
You dont need to give up anything, except your time.

Nobody is doing China Studies in Sec 3.

To be honest, SCGS is very kind in that even special programmes such as BSP, is primarily interest driven. You don't have to do well in HCL to qualify to participate in the programme.

When you say BSP is primarily interest driven, does that mean participation in the program is by application? So if I get 55% in HCL but I am very interested, I apply and I get it? Since it is interest driven.

Or is it by selection? Where students are first offered the program and they choose whether or not to participate in it based on their interest?

Yes, I think BSP in SCGS is primarily interest driven. Those who are keen can just apply. SCGS is kind in a way, will try to accommodate most students’ choices. My DD1’s HCL wasn’t good, she scored B4 in sec 2. She applied for BSP and the school accommodated her. Somehow DD1 enjoyed BSP very much even though her Chinese is not strong.

My DD1’s English is one of her better subjects maybe due to the English speaking environment, Chinese is one of her weaker subject unfortunately, so I am grateful she get to try out BSP and loving it! Not many applied for BSP as ultimately, SCGS is not a SAP sch.

Is the BSP class taught entirely in Chinese or mainly Chinese with some English? How often is HCL, 3x per week? I sense it is not easy to maintain the Chinese in secondary school if not using daily, and so many other obligations to spend time on.

The mode of communication among SCGS girls is definitely English as the default - I was looking at my DD's class photo and of the 30 girls, 11 or 12 are not Chinese 🙂 I do love the diversity at SCGS.

SCGS just moved to a 10-day timetable arrangement w.e.f. 2021 - not sure how many HMT periods there are, but definitely not everyday.

Actually I remember your sharing about the B4 and BSP. So we were discussing about Cs and BSP. And it unlikely that every application guarantees acceptance into the program.

But yes, I agree B4 is not considered stellar so it is nice that she gets to do what she wants.

My boy has HCL 3x per week or 6x per 10-day cycle. It is probably the same (+/-) everywhere given time constraints. I feel like even with ACC and CL Lit his Chinese can still use some work (vs having the subject daily). Let's just say I don't think the teacher was worried about running out of red ink on a few of his compos so far this year...

Regardless, I think is is great that SCGS girls can (mostly) get the subjects they are interested in. I've been trying to figure out how this works for more schools but not so easy to do all the time.

Still a ways to go for my girl but watching SCGS closely.
