CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' Secondary
-
I’m not sure whether the SN girl was forced to drop or must go for remedial. I only heard the mum saying that she prayed her daughter could get a B for her coming O level HCL then she would be very happy liao.
Why strange? In fact, I am very appreciative of the school to let my DD1 do BSP even though she was a B-grader in HCL. Scoring a B in HCL at lower secondary doesn’t mean that at end of sec 4, can still maintain at B right? If a student gets A1 for everything and a C for HCL, of cos the school won’t advise student to drop HCL because there is no need to. If a student were to score D7 for HCL, and a better grade in MT means a difference between promotion or retention, I supposed the student should revert to normal Chinese instead of continuing to struggle in HCL.
I also find it strange that for SAP sec where students study so hard for Chinese, yet they can opt not to include HCL in the overall computation of their results. You mean promo for sec 4 to JC1 or from sec 1 onwards? -

I find this strange too. That St Nicholas uses L1 (EL or HMT) whereas SCGS requires HCL to be included. Because I know NY requires both EL and HCL too (so can they drop to CL if they are terrible in HCL? Will they be forced to drop in order to preserve their overall MSG?) Could it be because St Nicholas follows the L1R5? The underlined parts, erm...some students study hard for Chinese, some dont. SAP does not immediately translate to studying hard for Chinese.lee_yl\" post_id=\"2021045\" time=\"1619084709\" user_id=\"17023:
I also find it strange that for SAP sec where students study so hard for Chinese, yet they can opt not to include HCL in the overall computation of their results.
Then also, if I take EL and CL in SC IP and I get avg 65% because all my subjects are 65 and you take EL and HCL in SC IP and you get avg <65% because all your other subjects are 65 but your HCL 50, and you fail to promote? Is this a likely scenario? -
lee_yl\" post_id=\"2021045\" time=\"1619084709\" user_id=\"17023:So I reread the whole chunk to see where the new parts are. So this was what is new right?
I will answer it.
Has to be Sec 4 to JC1, as
1) I have written in the earlier post (addressing what you wrote about sec 4 promotion)
2) Only sec 4 to jc1 is 65% isnt it?
Sec 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4 is not 65%
Or are we different here too?

So HCL is included in the 65% promotion criteria to EJC? Then I guess here is why it is different. HCL is not a compulsory subject to be included in the promotion criteria to EJC, You can use EL or HCL, or both if you like.lee_yl\" post_id=\"2021032\" time=\"1619071974\" user_id=\"17023:
In SCGS, ....so that the overall % can hit minimum of 65% (for sec 4) in order to be promoted.

Sorry for the confusion cos I got confused myself.

For sec 1 to sec 3, promo criteria is overall 60% and computation includes HCL. Every year, my DD1’s overall result was pulled down by HCL. And if a student’s HCL caused a student’s result to be pulled down such that the overall slipped below 60%, then student would be retained
Overall 65% is for sec 4 to JC1. Initially I thought same as previous years, HCL is included in computation but DD1 said only pick English and best 5 subjects.
For SCGS, if a student’s HCL scores below C6, then must drop HCL. -

Haha ok, apologies accepted.

So ya, sec 4 to EJC is min 65% L1R5. So it is not just best 5 subjects. It has to be one MA, one science, one Humanities subject and then another 2.
Anyway. For a school like SC, i doubt anyone who could get in, would be unable to get min 60%. Afterall, I assume there would be various checkpoints in the form of graded tests and assignments throughout the year, so one should be caught off guard only in Oct. -
So the promo criteria for SN from sec 1 to sec 4 is about the same? Guess a tiny difference is that in SCGS one cannot continue HCL once it goes below C6.
Anyway, back to BSP. My DD2 is also taking BSP but at another sec sch. Both of my children’s schools is by application and not by invitation. I supposed not everyone good in Chinese is keen in it while it doesn’t mean that those not so good in Chinese won’t have an interest in China. -

Noted on the difference between the 2 schools on the consequence of scoring below C6 for HCL. Here, one does not even need to pass it to go on to EJC. What about NY? Do they need to drop to CL is if they dont get a min grade?

I agree that there is truth your last statement. BSP here is by invitation, which you can accept or decline. I suppose if they do it by application, they may be swamped with too many? The cohort size in SNGS is bigger than that in SCGS? And one generally expect more students in a SAP school to be interested than a non SAP school? And while it is even bigger in NY, maybe because there is BSP and CLEP, not the same, but similar in the sense that both are about Chinese (sort of), so they expect the interested-in-Chinese pool to spread out between the 2 programs? Anyway theses are all my guesses, I dont know any school authority to know why they decide to do what they do.
Point to repeat also, that BSP + Triple Sc here poses no conflict. BSP + Triple Sc + Science Talent Development also poses no conflict. + Art also ok. Like I said before, the only thing you need to give up is your time. You dont need to make (hard) choices. And E Lit is not a compulsory subject to study for in upper sec, though I think it is good to study E Lit. -
Info, fresh out from Parents Gateway today -
SNGS Secondary school pupils who have a younger sibling due for Primary 1 enrolment under Phase 1 sibling (starting 2022 P1 next year) -
may fill up the form & submit to school, by the due date.
As ours is a full school,
even though Secondary pupils have never studied in St Nick primary before, Yes, their younger sibling (sister), if any, still qualify under the "Phase 1 sibling" Primary 1 registration. Do login to Parents Gateway, for further info -

Remember this? How unbecoming that MOE person answering the phone is so grossly ill informed. :pokeeye:

Thanks for confirming it is Phase 1.“phtthp”:
If the elder sister is an existing student at St Nicks Sec, the younger sister can join St Nicks Pri at Phase 1.
Dear Seniors
Please help. I have read some posted replies dated 2013 but not sure whether the policy has now changed.
Question: if my older girl is in St Nicholas Secondary school (but from non St Nic 9Primary) . Is my younger daughter eligible to apply P1 under phase 1? or phase 2a2? Or not eligible at all?
Thank you in advance
Hi George,
below is the reply, from MOE.
Although CHIJ St Nicholas is a full school..... if your older daughter is currently still studying in the Secondary school section, ...
Your younger daughter doesn't qualify under Phase 1 , unless your older daughter is currently still studying inside St Nick Primary school section, but not the Secondary
-
It’s disappointing that the people at the ministry can give you wrong information. Sigh. A little bird told me that there’s going to be a new education minister.
