yes, respect for our elders is first in priority for us, but for some, it is Religion first, Family second

3boys,
tree nymph,
this is fundamentally the issue when it comes to these types of exchanges. A small incident gets spice added with each re-telling, until suddenly, it becomes a gross misdemeanour.
Does anyone here actually know the whole story? Did the father relent and change his mind? There are so many unknowns, yet folk in this forum, in blissful ignorance, would choose to pile in and point an accusing finger.
Yes, its OT from the topic. But to whoever posted the topic in the first place, was it not entirely predictable that it was going to turn into a bashing session, that it would head down this path from Post #3 onwards?
I seriously don't think this is a bashing session and I am slo not pointing my finger at anything. I don't think anyone here treats it this way.
For me, its a matter of basic respect and tolerance to all religion. -

but i couldn't really know how i will feel
you are right, some kids are already not obeying parents when parents are alive, what more when they are dead??

ashes to ashes, dust to dust...
The dead may not feel anything afterall... :!: :!: -

Told her repercussion is serious for the peacefulness of my soul and after life as well as for their karma (that include their kids) and don't play play...
Unfortunately, this is only applicable if they share the same belief that has the element of karma

somehow, i feel that daughters make better bearers of last wishes than sons...
I was sharing with my daughter about this last night and told her must respect my last wish ....

tree nymph:
I don't think this was tree nymph's intent, she just shared what she knew about what some people had done.

Also Christian's are also human beings, so they can make mistakes. In fact there are Christians who can misinterpret the Biblical teachings too, so we have to know God based on who He is and not what Christians are.
Having said this, I do agree that this CHC issue under scrutiny now is not a function of religion so this discussion into religion is not so appropriate. This whole episode rooted from one of the seven sins embedded in most people....and that is GREED.
Durai and Ming Yi has already shown us their misdeeds when they were tempted and they were not Christians but other religions. So what really worries me is that even with a religion, it seems that it is still not a sufficient condition to counter this deadly temptation of GREED when alot of money is presented before one's eyes..... Then what else must be done?? :? -
A parentβs last wish on burial rites must absolutely be respected. However, I feel that if it contradicts the beliefs of the child to participate in parts of the rituals, he/she should be allowed to opt out, and one should not be judgmental about it.

Agreed. This is what I feel about it too, whatever religious beliefs one has.
To honor one's father & mother is definitely a biblical teaching, a commandment in fact.

PS: Actually very simple what to follow a person's, esp a parent's, last wish on 'burial pattern'... cannot follow simple instruction??
I believe it should be a DETAILED instruction rather than a simple one. A non believer of any religion will not know what is 'good enough' so better the person decide on his own 'set menu' than to have service provider giving all sorts of options which later the children also confused!!
I've seen some funeral/wake which started off as Buddhist and later on became a mish mash of buddhism/taoism rites coz many people tried to make money out of the situation and the grieving ones often to confused and obliging.
