Kids in P6 this year. My first PSLE children. Appreciate advice from experienced parents.

Boot Camps in June, which subject to go for? Weaker or stronger subjects?
        Any good places to consider?

My DD sits for PSLE last year, she only had Chinese 1-1 tuition for a few months after CB with a former Chinese teacher. The rest of the subjects, I just coached her. My opinion

English - do well in paper 2 on the various editing, vocab cloze, in another word, read more story books, learn more power phases

Maths - practice more, this subject is relatively the easiest among the 4 subjects, practice the past year school papers will do

Science - MCQ needs to be correct and perfect. Open-ended questions need to enforce the concept of keywords. The marker marked according to keywords. Comparative questions need to use comparative words, like fastest, slowest, bigger, smaller etc. Some notes from Pique Lab are very useful.

In other words, practice more past year papers.

Hi is it ok to share your Chinese tutor’s contact? I am looking one for my girl. She is P6 and need help in her Chinese. Thanks in advance.

My friend was sharing with me that in her daughter’s class, 2 classmates with 91 marks were crying , not shedding tears of joy but sobbing sadly over 91 marks for Maths. To my understanding, AL1 is 90 and above.

The children must be so stressed with the exam and as parents, perhaps should reflect on the pressure putting on children unknowingly and to teachers who have students crying over 91 marks, perhaps should help these students with their mental well-being.

:siao: Ya lor, 90 is already AL1, what’s there to cry about getting 91? :siao:

Maybe their parents cannot let go of the bygone era of T score system, threatened to cane them or sthg...

I doubt it’s the kids themselves (or the teachers) who feel that 91 is not good enough. Unless they are some perfectionist kind of personality.

Even my P5 already talks in terms of AL. Learnt the lingo from his teachers.

At 91%, one is only left with room for ONE more mistake in MCQ and the score will slip to AL2.

If every subject incurs an additional MCQ mistake, 91% could become 89%, then an AL4 pointer slips to 8 pointer.

Honestly, if the kid or her parents are not aiming for top schools, then there is no need to be overly stressed.

I think the boundary condition and jump up/down an AL is going to be stressful throughout the scoring range (to the extent the child/parent incur stress at all). AL4 to AL8, AL8 to AL12, AL12 to AL16, or AL16 to AL20 (range covers some AMRs) is all the same for a whopping 4 raw marks difference in total marks out of 400. Likely, everyone is disappointed if you miss your target. The thing about any of the scenarios above is that your options available change soooo much (not just for those at the top).

The good news is statistically that won't happen much. The bad news is statistically it will happen. I've always believed that no matter how hard you prepare, there is still some good luck involved here. Even if the good luck is simply the absence of bad luck.

Anyways, best of luck to all those who are sitting for the exams this year. Hopefully, there will be no disruptions to the school year. In hindsight, last year's P6s were fortunate that the CB was early and they had a clean run through the prelims and PSLE...

Sharing some CL oral topics tested so far in some of this year's SA1 exam 😉 :

                    - 遵守规矩
                    - 注意卫生
                    - 诚实
                    - 环保
                    - 节省资源
Quite a lot of schools (the ones I know of) used the same pictures for 看图作文

                    - 偷窃 (boy stole soft drink after Mum refused to buy for him, shop assistant saw his act and stopped mother and son from leaving the store)
                    - 见义勇为 (boy saw another boy being outnumbered by bullies, didn't dare to stop and help, decided he should do something and eventually called the police)

Please share if there are other themes that were tested. Cheers!
