To safely achieve herd immunity against COVID-19, a substantial proportion of a population would need to be vaccinated, lowering the overall amount of virus able to spread in the whole population.

As of May 17, about 1.97 million individuals (approx 35% of Singapore's 5.7 million people) had received at least one dose of the vaccine as at May 9. Of this number, about 1.4 million people have received their second dose and completed the full vaccination regimen.

With the decision to widen the gap between doses, we are expecting to administer at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine to its entire adult population by early August.

      https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/herd-immunity-lockdowns-and-covid-19

Our population is 5,890,587 as of Tuesday, May 18, 2021, based on Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data.
      https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/singapore-population/

By end Jul, 4.3 mil would have received their first shot. So in 6 to 8 weeks from end-Jul, which is end-Sept or early-Oct, they would have received their 2nd shot + 2 weeks to be classified as ''fully vaccinated''.

So that's 73% herd immunity, excluding the 12- to 15-year-olds, the breastfeeding & pregnant mommies, the remaining 40% elderly who can't or refuse to take the vaccine.

Read some experts said we need to achieve 80% herd immunity? Is that a tall order, since we're already jabbing the high quality mRNA that has 95% efficacy rate?

Guess we parents all have to start singing ''Rasa Sayang'' to our eligible kids who will be lining up in the school hall to get their Pfizer into their arms. 😂

      Thanks for sharing. 😄

The percentage of people who need to be immune in order to achieve herd immunity varies with each disease. For example, herd immunity against measles requires about 95% of a population to be vaccinated. The remaining 5% will be protected by the fact that measles will not spread among those who are vaccinated. For polio, the threshold is about 80%. The proportion of the population that must be vaccinated against COVID-19 to begin inducing herd immunity is not known.

      P/S:-
I only managed to find from local sources that Singapore's population is 5.69 million (as of Jun 2020). Not sure how frequent it is updated (yearly?).

The take-up rate is actually quite encouraging.

About 71 per cent of eligible seniors aged 60 and above, as well as 66 per cent of eligible adults aged 45 to 59 have either received or registered for vaccinations.

I believe it will go higher especially for the seniors as MOH is trying to deploy home vaccination teams to home-bound individuals.

        Stay safe!

You may receive the COVID-19 vaccine before or after your flu vaccine. The current recommendation is to space the COVID-19 vaccination apart from other non-COVID-19 vaccinations for two weeks or more.

Better check with the clinic/doctor again when you book your flu vaccine.

                Stay safe.

'No truth' in India news reports claiming Singapore variant of COVID-19 virus: MOH

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Tuesday (May 18) said that there is “no truth whatsoever” in the assertion in several news reports in India that there is a Singapore variant of the COVID-19 virus.

The claims were reported in articles published by the Hindustan Times and NDTV, both publications from India.

The articles quoted tweets from Delhi’s chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was cited as saying that the new strain is “extremely dangerous for children” and could result in a third wave of infection in India.

MOH said in response on Tuesday that “there is no ‘Singapore variant’”.

“The strain that is prevalent in many of the COVID-19 cases in recent weeks is the B16172 variant, which originated in India,” it said.

“Phylogenetic testing has shown this B16172 variant to be associated with several clusters in Singapore.”

Two COVID-19 sub-variants from India have been detected among imported and community cases in Singapore, including those who have been linked to the Tan Tock Seng and Changi Airport clusters......

S’pore politicians may be trying too hard to sell the idea of vaccination to children. There are better ways to engage the community to encourage children to get vaccinated against covid-19

Covid 19 vaccination in Singapore is not compulsory. We are encouraged to be vaccinated to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
