Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools
-
Hi,
I am new to this forum and P1 registration exercise. I didn’t do my schooling in Singapore; so apologies if my questions are very basic. I have question on MTLs:
1. I understand that not all schools offer all MTLs. For example, Nan Hua Primary offers only Chinese, and doesn’t offer Malay and Tamil. Does that mean only Chinese students can apply for this school? Or, can anyone apply to this school, but can take only Chinese as MTL?
2. And what about foreigner students who are not Chinese, Malay or Tamil — can they apply to any school, and then pick one of the approved foreign languages as MTL?
Thanks -

Hello everyone!
I have one dilemma that I have been thinking about it for the longest time but couldn’t decide on anything.
My firstborn is in k1 now (born 2016) and second born is still a baby (born 2020). My husband is an alumni with Chongfu primary. I’m currently staying with my PIL at Sengkang which is less than 1km to Nan Chiau primary. Ideally I would wish that she can get in NCPS as it is just beside us.
If I enrol my firstborn in Chongfu, she will be in 2A. If I enrol her in NCPS, it would depend by much on luck under 2C.
If I give up 2A in CHongfu to go for 2C in NCPS, I can’t go back to Chongfu if I didn’t get a place in NCPS.
Is there anybody who got lucky and get a seat through waiting list before the start of primary school? -

I suggest just go for ballet 2C as traveling is a chore. The most is 2CS for another nearer school. Definitely you can try transfer and there will be lucky ones getting it but don’t bet on it.

I would do the same as above — I would ballot at 2C NCPS since it is right beside you, failing which, go for maybe Anchor Green at 2CS. My friend did this, ended up in Anchor Green and very happy there. So now the 2nd child is going to Anchor Green in Phase 1.

As for getting in through wait list before start of school, yes. I know one who got in to Anderson under Phase 1, meaning they didnt even apply to Pei Chun. Then they put themselves on the wait list at Pei Chun and got in before start of school. I am sure there are other examples but surely there will be many more who didnt make it. So this doesnt mean anything at all I guess? -

Enrol into your spouse Phase 2A Chongfu primary school, first.

Then seek transfer into Nan Chiau.
Chongfu Chinese standard, is good. When Nan Chiau school Principal look at the originating school name \"Chong fu\" and assuming that your child's Standard Chinese (lower primary) is Not weak, is easier to Transfer over.
On the other hand,
if your risk appetite is very high, don't mind trying your luck balloting at Phase 2C for NC, but if in the unfortunate event can't ballot in, question is :
are you able to accept any nearby primary school within 1 km, near your house ?
If Yes,
then go ahead to ballot at 2C, for Nan Chiau. Wishing you all the very best, at balloting.
Or perhaps,
by the time your child reach the end of P2, you may not even be interested in NC anymore. Perhaps, you may even consider transfer your son into Catholic High or transfer your daughter into (SCGS / MGS / St Nick / CHIJ Toa Payoh) primary, because of the affliation advantage. At end of P2 or P3, by that time, your child is already one step much closer, towards Psle. -

I’m afraid by the time her turn comes next year, Anchor Green may not be an option anymore. Anchor Green has a MK now, ie their students are eligible for Phase 2A2. If we use the other MKs application numbers as proxy, I’m expecting the number of available places for 2C to come down dramatically. The best example (nearby) being Fern Green - from 100s of places in 2CS, to balloting at 2C. This year's numbers for Anchor Green, Fernvale and North Vista will be very interesting  In all likelihood, she will have to be prepared to ballot for Anchor Green in 2CS or consider another school in 2CS (IIRC the only schools without MK in SK, and not at risk of balloting in 2CS are Seng Kang and North Spring).
I would do the same as above — I would ballot at 2C NCPS since it is right beside you, failing which, go for maybe Anchor Green at 2CS. Furthermore, the number of applicants for NCPS and the surrounding schools in the coming years will be going up (not down). A number of projects have been completed in the last couple of years and buyers of OLA (TOP still some time away) will be eligible to use their address for NCPS soon as well.
The real question is, is the forumer ok with any of the alternatives? If yes, go ahead and ballot for NCPS. If no, think again and revisit her options.
While not impossible to get in NCPS via transfer / waitlist, the odds are very low. Waitlist for NCPS is extremely long, even if you only account for those who are balloted out at Phase 2C, which is typically in excess of ~150 applicants. Nearly everyone in SK, whether they have applied to NCPS, will also be harbouring similar thoughts of transfer / waitlist. Thus, the reality is, she is most likely going to be stuck with the option that she has chosen. -

So in this case, I would go straight to a 1km school in SK in 2C that has no ballot.
I def won’t go to 2A CF. Too much travelling for negligible benefits.
