All About Full-Time Maids

noobparent:
So many horror stories about maids. Quite scary.
Any good experiences at all?
I find that my maid is quite good.
Hi Noobparent!
Yes, there are good maids around! It is not uncommon for me to hear my colleagues keeping their maids for years ie. 5 to 7 years and they all seem to do their job very well looking after the children and house work! One thing I noted is it seems in such households maids are treated like \"professionals\" ie. no different from an employee working in a company for an \"employer\". ie. got home leave, sick leave, whatever and expectation is that maid must perform their duties well!
For me, I got a very good maid, very automatic and does her job well. I am very fortunate in this aspect. So glad too that you have a very good maid! Guess those who kerna problem maid must find a place to vent so here is a good forum to vent and hopefully able to find help how to handle too!
Why not tell us why you think your maid is GOOD?
How do you select her?

yes, it's available, but i don't carry her wp card around mah.
you should have those info on the WP card, which i guess you should have a printed copy and a pdf copy on computer .....
thanks for your confirmation on the MOM web print out (though i have not lost a form before)....next time know where to look
no worries. That's how I renewed my ex-maid's wp also - very easily done using the website actually. -
my friend told me that she has no problems with her maid…and that’s cos there is no adult jaga at home. I have issues with my maid - and that’s typically becos my mum is around the whole day and she feedback to me. Perhaps herein lies the problem - having an adult at home who happen to be around when the maid is doing/not doing anything.

In fact, those I hear got problems with maids are typically those where there is old pp at home. -
Yet another story of how employer is liable for high medical bills chalked up by maid....and this after he had sent her back to agency becos of theft. She was taking in her clothes at the agency provided housing and fell.

With stories like this, tell me if there are more employers willing to give their maids a 2nd chance by waiting for possible re-employment. -

Hi
I agree with hquek. When the maid is totally in charge without adults around, most of the employers may not necessary be aware of their "other" activities. I am a SAHM and I can see for myself at playgrounds, on the road etc what these maids do and wonder if their employer knows what they are doing outside. My SIL’s maid has been with her for 15 years and although she has some complaints abt her, she can "closed one eye" as she is working and need someone reliable. For me as a SAHM, I find some of the things her maid did not acceptable to me. The difference, I think ,is that for someone like me or the MIL at home with the maid, we are actually sharing the housework, so if the maid is always skivving on her work (talking on HP for eg)or she does not follow the house rule, we will know and not be too pleased abt it.
Hi desertwind
I also agree there are good maids around. In fact, mine is with me 7 years now and is my first and only one. No special way to select one. We just walk into this agency, and also manage to talk to her over the phone and also talked to ex employer in singapore. I think getting a good maid is 50% luck. The other 50% is how we manage them ie professionally as an employee. However, good maid can also give you problems overtime (will have more friends (or boyfriend) so talk on HP more often, also can be more defiant after so many years. ) That’s another story anyway. -

Not too surprised, remember the maid that gave birth prematurely? I think the bill was far higher cos bb had to be kept in NICU. But I think she had to stay there for 20 days or something - and remember they are not subsidised (becos foreigner).

I am just amazed. Sent back to agency, normal pp would have assumed that agents will take care of the maid. Somemore she was keeping her own clothes.
If this happened in the home, employer will be taken to task for 'making' the maid take in clothes without due precaution. This happen under agent's watch....how come they don't kena hantam? -

My thoughts too!! The fact that the agency just wash-their-hands like that says alot about how trustworthy the agency is.

Today’s TODAY paper pg 12: "Lie lands Indonesian maid in jail" should serve as a warning to all employers and potential employers.
Its incredible how low some maids would stoop to get what they want like accusing their employer of abuse or molest just to get a transfer. I empathise totally with the employer’s father in this case. I should know. I’m also a victim of such a maid from hell.
I’ve learnt many things from this painful episode, just to name a few:
1) When your maid wants a transfer, let her go. Don’t try to persuade her to stay no matter how good she is, or how much you or your family like her. If she wants to transfer, it shows her heart is not in your family anymore, just let her go.
2) No matter how much you trust your maid, ALWAYS keep an eye on her. Any agreements between the two of you shld be written in black and white. Don’t let the maid have anything to turn against you or accuse you falsely just to get her own way.
3) Every payment made to her shld be signed by her. No matter how much you trust her. Remember, money is the root of all evil.
4) Dont assume that just becos she never tells you anything means she is happy working for you. Most times, they can put on a false front to you and badmouth you behind your back.
5) Dont assume that just becos you treat your maid well, she will appreciate or reciprocate likewise. Becos you will be deeply disappointed when she doesnt.
Anyway, after this horrible maid ordeal, lots of heartache and tears (from me), I will probably not hire any full time maids in future. May look into part time help instead… -
