Hi there,
We are currently renting a unit which is within 1 km to a rather popular school (unbeknown to us earlier) and ballotting history shown that < 1 km for every year is safe. This means as long as we are staying within 1 km, vacancy is almost guaranteed.
However, our new house will be TOPing soon, either end 2021 or latest mid 2022. This new house (our purchased unit) is about 2.5 km from this current school.
Is it an acceptable to apply for this school, then update MOE after we have moved out? We won’t be staying for 30 months minimum and wonder if this will be penalised by MOE? What is the worse thing that can happen with this option and what is the best advice for our situation?
Thanks much in advance.

Essentially, you should seek to extend your lease to cover the 30m period, unless u have the excuse of “severe economic hardship that necessitates the move”. Otherwise your kid will be kicked out of the school. -

You have basically 2 options:

1. As suggested by zac_mum, extend your lease to cover 30months and stay till the 30months is up.
2. Use the new address to apply, which also mean, you may have to consider or look at another school. -
:thankyou: this is really useful.

Hi. I’m just wondering if the parents have different NRIC address, will the school still consider? Eg my address is within 1km of the preferred school whereas my spouse’s address isn’t. Can I use my address to gain priority to enter the school if balloting is required for applicants staying within 1km?

In that case, is it possible that one spouse change NRIC to his/her own parent’s address, while the other remain at his/her own HDB flat ?

It is not advisable to play with different/separate addresses as parents/spouses unless you are staying in the address as per ICA regulations or couples are in process of a legal separation. A married individual shld aligned his/her matrimonial address & report to the police post for changes and avoid infringing ICA regulations which carries a penalty.

https://www.ica.gov.sg/documents/ic/update_residential_address
“ All Identity Card (IC) holders, including Singapore citizens and permanent residents who are residing overseas, are required to report a change of residential address within 28 days of moving into a new (local or overseas) residence.”
“ ICA reminds all Singapore Residents (Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents) that it is their responsibility to update their residential addresses to ensure that they remain contactable. The penalty for failing to report a change of address is a fine of up to S$5,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or to both ~ 19 Nov 2020”
One option is to obtain a Statutory Declaration, if yr child is being dated for by grandparents who resides within 1 km of a choice school. -
Hi all,
Would appreciate some help on the following questions
1) If my current address is tenanted till end Jan 2023, for next year p1 registration, will I still be able to use this address for registration when I can only move back in after Jan 2023?
2) are we allowed to change address throughout the registration phases?
Thank you. -

1) Technically, ypu can use if tenant is not going to use the address btwn now & end of tenancy. Legally, u’re not a resident of that address abd yr I/C will not reflect that, which means u still can’t use that address.

2) If u’ve used an address within 1km & obtain a P1 place for yr child, you are expected to reside within that 1km for st least 30 months. However, for various reasons, u may still stay within the rules if yr change of address is still within that 1km distance under 1 map.
