      Hi parents,

For JC1 subj combi, can H2 Arts replace Economics as contrasting subject? Can 3H21H1 subjects to be : H2 Math, H2 Physics/Chemistry, H2 Arts, H1 GP?
You need to have four content subjects. GP is not a content subject and hence should not be included in this 3H21H1.

Your 3H2 can be Physics, Maths, Econs and your H1 subject can be Chemistry. In this case, yes, you can substitute H2 Econs with H2 Arts.

However, if your 3H2 comprise of Physics, Chemistry, Maths and your 1H1 is Econs, no, you cannot substitute your H1 Econs with H2 Arts. You will be considered as taking 4H2 (with H2 Arts) in this case, not 3H21H1.

      Please see more information https://admindev.hci.edu.sg/uploads/HCI_College_Standard_Subject_Combinations_for_2021_JC_1_FINAL_a6b5dba4b1.pdf.

qms, thanks for giving examples for the subj combi. Good idea & might consider H2 Math, H2 Chem/Phy, H2 Econs, H1 Chem/Phys, and replaced H2 Econs with H2 Arts. šŸ™‚ May I ask what is the content involved for H2 Arts & how tedious and time taken for this subject? What is the typical timetable like for this subject combi at Hwa Chong? Is it common for this kind of subj combi?

Not many students in HCI take H2 Arts.

              What is the difference, between

              - taking (3H2 PCM + H1 Econs)

              vs.

              - taking 4H2 (PCM + Econs)
              subject combination,

              In terms of

              - university admission ?

              - applying for scholarship ?

              PCM :

refer to H2 (Physics, Chemistry, Maths)

Oh, I saw the A level results for last year 2020, and 8 out of 10 scored distinction for H2 Art, and 5 out of 10 scored distinctions for H2 Econs. So I thought H2 Arts is one of their best subjects as compared to Econs?

                  Perhaps, we first compare the

Total number of 2020-batch Hwa Chong A-level students

                  taking ( H2 Art vs. H2 Econs )

                    Hmm...

Less than 3% of the cohort takes H2 Arts. So, assuming yearly student cohort of 1,000, only 30 students take H2 Arts. The distinction rate of 80% for H2 Arts would have been achieved if at least 22 students scored A.

On the other hand, about 700-800 students take H2 Econs. So, you need to have at least 350 students scoring A.

                      In Hwa Chong 2nd year ( JC2 ),

out of say, around 1200 A-level students per batch,

normally, how many JC2 students are given the chance (opportunity)

                      - to do H3 Econs,

                      - to do H3 Chemistry,

                      - to do H3 Physics,

after the year-end JC1 promotional exam is over ?

If you take H1 Econs, in the calculation rank points, you can only use H1 Econs for the H1 content based subject points. Whereas if you take 4H2, the worst performing H2 subject, which need not be Econs, will be converted to H1 level to calculate the rank points.

Students taking 4H2 will stand a better chance with scholarship application, other things remaining equal.
