It's not uncommon for the girls to have tuition but there are also many who don't go for extra tuition. Like you said, there's already a lot to occupy them without adding on extra workload.

Having said that, it shouldn't really matter if it's common or if others are going for it, right? If your daughter can cope without it, then just continue without adding unnecessary work and expense, even if everyone else around her is attending tuition classes. And vice versa if she needs extra assistance.

DD1 started tuition right after CB, after last year’s 2 months of Zoom lessons. A few months after she started tuition, her results improved from C to A.

If one needs tuition for all subjects, confirm no time. But if one picks the worst 1 or 2 subjects to go for tuition, I think can squeeze out some time. I rather they go for tuition than spend time on social media.

Which subject? Tuition sounded really effective....
Hi

Would like to get some advice from parents when your dd does subject selection, what was her basis of choosing the subject she likes eg Science , double , triple, advance ...as they do not have clear idea on their career aspiration ( at least for mine) . How do you decide what subjects to choose ? Do most students take triple science in NYGH or an average of 9 subjects ? TIA :grphug:

Mainly based on interest and flexibility considerations (in terms of how much freedom she would have when choosing JC subject combinations).

I think (purely based on my own perception) majority takes 9 subjects. However, while there is a sizeable number of girls taking Triple Science, it is not like an overwhelming majority. The school offers a good mix of different subject combinations. Besides, quite a sizeable number of girls also take certain subjects at advanced level. I believe there will be a briefing session on subject combination for sec 2 coming up soon. Do attend that session. Very useful.

I think the majority takes 8, if I remember what was communicated in the briefing last year and quite a number of them do take advanced subjects.

At this stage, unless they really know what they want to do, there could be some level of peer or senior influence in the selection. So attending that talk is important to get a better overall perspective.
I feel more stress after attending the briefing, so many combi. My girl wanted triple science as she is more a science person and try not to take on additional humanities but is such a choice risky. Interest aside, if she doesnt do well in her IH, it will pull down her score. Should such be a consideration? For advance sciences, any parents has experience on the additional work load ?

But it is also good that they have so many opportunities to cater to their needs or to stretch their strengths further!

There are quite a number of girls who choose to take triple Science with only IH. Whether it is a risk or not, that really depends on your DD's goal and aptitude. IH is not a difficult subject, especially if your DD keeps abreast of current affairs of Sg.

However, overall, workload is heavier compared to lower sec. Hours are also longer even without advanced subjects. I am not sure about Science but I know advanced Maths and advanced humanities do not have additional class hours. The girls are just expected to take harder exam papers.

Talking to seniors and teachers directly probably would be the best to get a gauge of workload.

@leetaitai

Not sure about now but In dd’s time, they sit for separate advanced science papers for the sec 3 and that will be calculated into the MSG grade as it is the only paper they sit for that science subject.

For the critical year in sec 4, however it is different.
The student will sit for both the advanced science and standard science papers.
Only the standard science paper will be included in the MSG computation for sec 4.
The minimum requirement to take the science subject in JC (eg B3 for chemistry) will also be based on the overall grade for the standard science subject.
The advanced science paper will include some A level topics being brought down and the grade will be shown as pass/merit/distinction instead.

Dd took triple science with advanced science and IH as the only humanity subject back then. (Think there was additional lesson time every fortnight for the advanced science that she took to cover some academic/project work and learning journeys something like that.)
It’s her final choice after deliberating on it as she isn’t keen taking another humanity subject too.
I think it served her well.

Regarding IH, I guess u may have been a bit concerned as as it’s a new subject for the girls.
I do remember reading somewhere in this thread that the cohort average for Sec 4 IH was actually A1 last year.
It is also what dd got in Sec 4 although she wasn’t doing that well in IH back in sec 3.
I guess some just need a little more time to get better at it but they will improve with some guidance and practice.
So don’t worry too much…personally I would let my child find out more about it from her current seniors and teachers like what Swc suggested and if she is decided after considering her own interests and strength, I would just give her my support.
All the best to yr girl!

Lego, thank you so much for the insight ..its enlightening and I truly appreciate it 😃. I am really relief to hear that its ok to go with just IH as even her teacher mentioned more students are taking on humanity subjects vs triple science. You are right, I guess its really up to her at the end of the day and she must be comfortable with it. I will have another talk with her after her wa to get her to speak to her seniors and teachers before making the decision. Thank you so much for all of your advice.
