Reading the parents’ comments on FB, it seems that those who have written excuse letters & kept their kids at home, have been given “absent without valid reason” and they find this unfair.

What is the implication of “absent without valid reason”? And why are parents angry with this? If there’s no real penalty or punishment to be dealt out, then it’s just an issue of words right? If someone edits it to “voluntary absence due to parent letter” or sthg, will that make it easier to swallow?

And someone raised a very valid point: even if kids stay at home and do HBL, vaccinated parent goes out to buy food, shop for groceries, (visit KTV or market), still carries a higher risk (statistically) of infecting the unvaccinated child.[/quote]

Sadly. Empathy is missing in his words and actions. Calling out a child for being absent without valid reason is equating it to truancy, which is not that case, as the valid reason is the risk of covid infection.

No dine in and adults work from home. Children take public transport and go to school. Contradicts itself, it’s illogical behaviour.

Yes there is a need for more transparency. More information can be shared to reduce anxiety.

68 students from 51 schools. These numbers quite meaningless. Give such figures to scare parents?
Why not list out all the primary and secondary schools affected in a chart form, indicating beside each school, whether the student/staff contracted Covid through household members or in school.

Then we can have a clearer picture. There seems to be quite a number of schools affected but if each school only has 1 or 2 student positive case (the 2 could be siblings etc), contracted through same household, then it shows that our schools’ environment is still relatively safe.

Why do parents get angry, over \"absent without valid reason\" ?

            Because

These comments can appear inside their school report card, over their school attendance :
the number of days, absent from school

            What's next ?

When these P6 students apply for DSA, and Secondary school Principals can see their Report card content, which parent would want the DSA Principal to see this comment ?

            Solution ?

Suggest to their class form Tr to change the comment from
\"Absent from school, without valid reason\"

            To

\"Absent from school on HBL, risk of infection \" sounds better ?

            After all,

Isn't HBL a valid reason to be absent from school, with the on-going pandemic ?

Weirdly I feel like a certain ministry is trying to boost the hotel industry by giving them more business. QO, the latest new freebie. More and more people I know had been served the QO.

Is there any website listing the active Covid clusters?
I am wondering if there are many clusters in Clementi now. I just had two friends who were issued with QOs yesterday, and both had their exposure to a positive Covid case in Clementi.

Hearsay after changing Health Minister, this current one is very aggressive and recently had more than 19K pax put on QOs.

If 2pax on public transport sat near each other for more than 20mins and 1 tested positive for Covid, the other pax would be called up to serve QO.

It is not easy to apply to do QO at home. Easiest just go to hotel.

Anyway, with daily 130+ cases with no sign of slowing down, looks like we will take a long time to bring cases down to near zero (hopefully by end August).

Days on HBL are not marked as absent. Only for absentees with parents letter. AWOL, you know? 😆

There are 2 different type of HBL

                  1) those that the govt publicly announced and broad cast, \"All schools to go on HBL, for 2 weeks\", yes, you are right. They are not marked as absent.

                  Why ?

                  Because govt announced mah !

                  2) those that the govt didn't announce publicly
                  but
                  because
some student in their child's school caught the virus and parents scared, worried, self-declared their own HBL, that means, self study at home don't let their kid go to school, this type will go under \"Absent without valid reason \"

                  Because

                  did govt announce anything ?
                  No

                    Going forward,

think schools should implement something like what eg. Mavis tuition centre doing. That means, give students the option

                    - to attend school physically on site F2F,

                    come on, be realistic !

How can u all expect National exam students (Psle / O level/ A level) forever, always on HBL ? Ridiculous !

                    Or

                    - to attend school from home, via technology platform.

Of course, school Teachers will complain, too much work involved to prepare

DS school has several schoolmates whose parents keep them at home just to be safe. They simply inform the form teacher via email of their reasons. The form teacher does not condemn these kids as playing truant. The kids all know who is staying at home with excuse letter, the kids the teachers - everybody is understanding about it. So there is a gap between what happens on the ground and the official stance on marking such absences as “uncondoned”.

I can also tell u however, that the kids at home are super bored, especially if they have no adult at home to engage them. They msg the class WhatsApp group during school hours saying they are bored & playing computer games whole day is not fun anymore. If parents allow them to go playground to interact with other kids as a solution, it’s also exposure. Complete isolation is not feasible. Even the WFH parents also go out to gai gai & da bao food. Nobody really confines themselves at home for days on end, will go mad.

Half half. Aggressive QO is one way.
Give business to hotels just to keep them alive only. Else with tourism dead, many hotel staff will be sleeping on the streets by now.
