Actually I really don't get the appeal of RGPS. There is no affiliation and just a girls school. Being a GEP centre does not increase one's chance of being in GEP. In RGPS, most girls are heavily tutored and go enrichment centres. So we cannot say the sterling results is due to the school's effective teaching too.

The appeal is probably the brand. And I think rgps is one of the branded schools that is easier to get in. Therefore many people just go for it. The other branded schools are harder for 2C. So if one is looking for brand, and he looks at sc, mg, sn, ny, rg….. rg would the one to try for.

The thing about heavily tutored + good results vs heavily tutored + not so good results, has little to do with the school. It would be the tuition centers that they go to.

Also, nobody really has the stats on their non gep PSLE results vs other schools mainstream results right? :siam: think i read in this thread some time ago that their mainstream normally go to Crescent and St Margs. Nothing wrong with these schools though…

I have no comments about the tutored / non-tutored thing.

Based on brand (which I assumed to be a GEP / SAP school thing), it's probably one of the easiest to get in. Most years, SC < 1km would get in safely, whereas for other GEP and SAP schools, you are really only getting a ticket to ballot < 1km. Getting in without losing a lot of hair would have been a big appeal in itself.

In terms of results, based on the last known (verifiable) PSLE results from circa 2012 to 2014, RGPS has about 91% eligible for express (> 200). That number is more-or-less in line with TNS (92%) and better than HPPS (86%), Rosyth (83%) and SHPS (77%). While I doubt that > 40% from RGPS are scoring 250 & above, as that would have been way above the averages of TNS and HPPS (33%) and really in the region of NYPS (allegedly, > 45%), I believe that majority of the school's students are doing way better than the national average and qualifying for schools like CGS etc.
The percentage of RGPS students scoring above 250+ in 2019 is around 45%, for 2020 it should be more or less the same. Perhaps RGPS parents can verify this.

Which is why I said it is not really because of the school.

Those numbers include GEP kids. Verified in other threads before.

Err… since you listed it, I would have assumed you would be able to verify it?

TBF, TNS, HPPS etc numbers do not break down by GEP / non-GEP as well. Their numbers, over the years, haven’t really moved much.

If those are indeed RGPS recent numbers, it means they have really improved leaps and bounds (performance wise) since 2012 and may even be better than NYPS

Since you say RGPS only rely on \"expensive\" tuition to achieve good academic result, not because of the teachers or the school. Then I am sure you must know of some other schools that impress upon you with their less tuition and good result policy.

How about give us some examples of such schools and those RGPS \"expensive tuition centers\" you were saying.

I think one recent year the number for RGPS was 38%. I followed it closely for a few years because of Niece.

Is it because RGPS improve or more people invest $ in tuition is hard to say.

But if a school expects parents to do more (check work, revise) etc right from the start, then parents who cannot handle the extra work will hire tutors earlier.

Are you a teacher at RGPS or you have a kid at RGPS or a parent who is eyeing the school? Why do you sound so offended?

I did not say RGPS only rely on expensive tuition. But I said anyone who think that it is just because of school that resulted in the academic outcome really have no clue. Go taste the grapes yourself, you don't have to believe my words at all.

If you know a lot of RGPS graduates who DO NOT depend one expensive tuition at all AND do not have hands on parents, then come and refute my statements. I will be happy to listen.

Because for YOU, I spent 20 min counting ALL the kids I know who attended/still attending RGPS. And I know over 30 kids from RGPS. And I think that is a lot more than usual. Like I said I have personal experiences with RGPS too. Of course with a cohort of 270 a year, what is 30 kids, right? Your ACS and billionaire example?! LOL. You can carry on to believe what you believe. No problem for me at all.

I am by no means saying RGPS is not a good school. It is a great school in all respects. Like all schools, there are great teachers and those whom parents are unhappy with. There are happy kids and unhappy ones. There are some happy and unhappy parents. If you are a GEP kid, then it is different because RGPS may fit your kid more than another GEP centre. But for MS kids, very little difference IMHO.

If I live within 1km or very easy to get into RGPS, say I live right next to it, then it is a no brainer. But if not, no need to pull your hair out if kid cannot make it there in P1 registration.

I am not going to cite the tuition centres here. They didn't pay me.

RGPS is a very old school and they have been a very popular school perhaps long before you took any interest in children education and certainly way before your niece was even born. If expensive tuitions guarantee good PSLE result, then why arent we seeing that from ACS since the majority of the children there are known to be rich kids?

So which primary schools in Singapore really impress you for having less tuition but good result?
