As long the number of infections are reasonable and similar to typical flu (like 100-200 a day) I think it should be relatively safe to visit a country. I think because the number of infections are relatively low in Singapore and most of us are most likely not to know personally someone who has contracted Covid and recovered, it is easy to be paranoid. So far reports from US and UK seem to confirm that though the vaccines do not prevent infection completely, they do work in mitigating the symptoms significantly, so I have faith that even if I contracted Covid, it would be inconsequential.
I find it kind of contradiction. OYK said be mentally prepared that daily cases and death rates WILL go up. So even if SHN free, would anyone want to risk his life to visit SG whose cases are inching up on a daily basis? Not likely right?
It’s like now, even if I were to offer you a free air-ticket to India/China for holidays, SHN free, would you want?
Another question, as we see more cases, will MORE folks here be put on QO?? Will Singaporeans be angry if we need to serve 14 day QO or LOA but tourists come in with no need 14 days SHN? -
So can we stop reporting how many Covid-19 cases we have everyday? Do away with the SHN,
quarantines and ring-fencing too. Whoever heard of all these things for flu? In fact, don’t even bother reporting how many people are critically ill or died from Covid-19. We don’t do that for flu either. -
There should be alot of effort put in in order for daily numbers to be within that range, I guess.

I feel that it’s discrimination to socially separate the vaccinated from the unvaccinated… causing social distress. Could we have approached this differently? With more empathy?

The recent death rate is the result of the spread of cases recently in markets where more elderly contracted the disease. Unfortunately, the elderly unvaccinated with underlying diseases are the ones most likely to die of Covid. If the spike had been in the dormitories (mainly younger, healthier, vaccinated men) or in some other venue with younger, healthier, vaccinated people, the mortality rate would not be so high. Look at it from the other viewpoint of needing to protect the unvaccinated from infection, and needing to protect others from the higher risk of infections from unvaccinated infected people. If the unvaccinated and those in contact with them are to be given more protection from infection, either the rest of the population must be restricted, or the unvaccinated have to be restricted. But the vaccinated population do not need to be as restricted for their own safety. So should there be empathy for those who are losing business, income, suffering mental health issues, etc?

It's like the rules about under-16s riding e-scooters. The rule could have been framed to prohibit anyone from riding e-scooters because younger people are less safe (for themselves as well as for others) on e-scooters. Instead, Singapore has a rule that prevent under-16s from riding e-scooters. That is discriminatory in the same way as the rules for the unvaccinated. -

The problem with case counts is that it very much depends on how much testing is done, and whether asymptomatic cases are detected or counted. Even if we travel at the end of the year, I would probably try to avoid the biggest cities and most crowded places, just in case!

Singapore, in a way, shoots itself in the foot by testing so extensively and counting asymptomatic cases. I think they need to split the asympotomatic cases from the headline no. Then our case count will not be as high and less frightening to others (and ourselves).
