Tell that to these professors who say flu used to kill more than 500 people a year in Singapore.

Strangely I kept seeing contradictory reports. The number of deaths this week is rather alarming.

You have to look at the underlying causes, not just at the numbers alone. The recent death rate is the result of the spread of cases recently in markets where more elderly contracted the disease. Unfortunately, the elderly unvaccinated with underlying diseases are the ones most likely to die of Covid. If the spike had been in the dormitories (mainly younger, healthier, vaccinated men) or in some other venue with younger, healthier, vaccinated people, the mortality rate would not be so high. Nothing can be done about age, and (in the short term) about underlying health conditions, but vaccination is more easily achievable.
The ordinary person on the street is going to look at the numbers only! Mostly seeing high death rates and increasing infected cases and then thinking why the **** are we returning to dine in. It does makes one feel that the economy and money making is all our policy-makers are concerned about.

And justified discrimination is still discrimination!
I find it kind of contradiction. OYK said be mentally prepared that daily cases and death rates WILL go up. So even if SHN free, would anyone want to risk his life to visit SG whose cases are inching up on a daily basis? Not likely right?

It’s like now, even if I were to offer you a free air-ticket to India/China for holidays, SHN free, would you want?

Another question, as we see more cases, will MORE folks here be put on QO?? Will Singaporeans be angry if we need to serve 14 day QO or LOA but tourists come in with no need 14 days SHN?

As long the number of infections are reasonable and similar to typical flu (like 100-200 a day) I think it should be relatively safe to visit a country. I think because the number of infections are relatively low in Singapore and most of us are most likely not to know personally someone who has contracted Covid and recovered, it is easy to be paranoid. So far reports from US and UK seem to confirm that though the vaccines do not prevent infection completely, they do work in mitigating the symptoms significantly, so I have faith that even if I contracted Covid, it would be inconsequential.

The problem with case counts is that it very much depends on how much testing is done, and whether asymptomatic cases are detected or counted. Even if we travel at the end of the year, I would probably try to avoid the biggest cities and most crowded places, just in case!

Singapore, in a way, shoots itself in the foot by testing so extensively and counting asymptomatic cases. I think they need to split the asympotomatic cases from the headline no. Then our case count will not be as high and less frightening to others (and ourselves).
Agree!

Singapore is just too kiasi and protective over the unvaccinated. We're so diff from the Europeans. The city centres seem quite ok these 2 weeks. I see residents optionally donning their masks.

Would imagine smaller coastal towns like Amalfi, islands like Santorini and medieval towns like Colmar to be less crowded on weekdays.

Agree. If the unvax high risk group is just the elderly then why can't we implement the \"discriminatory\" policy to this specific group only. And anyway they prob stay home most of the time so may not be impacted much.

the unvaccinated would say that this is discrimination and unfair to them as vaccination is voluntary

I am in arts and education industry and I lost quite a fair bit of income these couple of years. I am one of the luckier ones, a few of my fellow colleagues have to turn to other professions like delivery rider to tide them over. There are others from FnB, tutors, tourism, fresh graduates who can't get jobs, people who are retrenched, etc who are equally impacted. If you are asking me to be magnanimous and support prolonged restrictive Covid policies to the detriment of my career, sorry hor, I am not noble enough.

It is called ''Differentiation'' to protect those of you who are waiting for other vaccines or not intending to vaccinate. In any case, you can still eat in pairs at the hawker centres.

The aggrieved unvaccinated should understand that there could be unvaccinated foreigners who are coming in via ATP (NO need SHN at all) to dine around you.

There are also Group 2 folks from HK, Macao, Jiangsu who only need to serve 7 days SHN. Some of them took CoronaVac/SinoPharm or 4 other China EUA vaccines.

And Group 4 which consists mainly of fully vaccinated Europeans who can serve their SHN at place of residence from 20 Aug: Australia; Austria; Canada; Germany; Italy; Norway; Republic of Korea (ROK); Switzerland

These expats/short-term visitors will be out after 14 days SHN with you at the restaurants, if you don't want the MTF to 'discriminate' you from dining-in (in groups of five) at F&B outlets. You not scared?

I understand the US FDA is rushing thru the full approval of Pfizer by early Sept. 6 Sept Labour Day is target date.

Once the BLA is obtained, it can become mandatory for Americans aged 16 & above to take this vaccine, methinks. In other words, everyone must guai guai jab.

And knowing Singapore HSA, we will usually follow suit a month or so later. If this vaccine becomes mandatory here, this debate on ''discrimination'' probably won't exist anymore for eligible persons aged 16 years & above. Thereafter, only the unvaccinated aged <=15 will feel ''discriminated'', as the BLA application was only for >=16.

Also, keep in mind SG has ever conducted 'https://www.moh.gov.sg/docs/librariesprovider5/resources-statistics/reports/special-featurecea58aaf14d24e759798142525eda9a2.pdf, so...

President Biden said last week that he expected a fully approved vaccine in early fall. Some Biden administration officials have pushed publicly for the FDA to move faster.

“I do hope it is going to be within the next couple of weeks,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on CNN Tuesday. “They said hopefully by the end of the month. I hope it is even sooner than that.”

This year alone, we have seen quite a number of Covid-19 HAWKER CENTRE CLUSTERS, starting with the Bukit Merah View cluster followed by the recent spate. So the assumptions that hawker centres are “well ventilated and outdoors” and are less susceptible to Covid virus may not hold true.

I think Foodcourts have fewer clusters than hawker centres? Maybe NEA should study deeper to uncover what are the driving forces behind these hawker centres clusters and how to resolve them. All along I feel unsafe eating at hawker centres compared to restaurants. I can have the whole table in restaurants all to myself if I dine alone but at hawker centres, I was always asked if I could share table during peak hours.

If unvaccinated folks can only dine at hawker centres then govt is pushing all the unvaccinated folks to gather at those hawker centres, my goodness!! And after a while, will hawkers and hawker assistants pull down their masks when the weather gets hot and humid during the day? Old folks at Jurong or Bukit Merah (regardless vac or not) will continue to visit their nearby hawker centres. I don’t think pushing all the unvaccinated ppl to gather at hawker centres is to protect the unvaccinated ppl, it’s like ushering them to a death trap. Ticking time bomb.

Yes, you forgot there are 1.5mil FTs in Singapore, whose tenure may be up or have resigned, so their replacements must come in! Some expats (and their dependants) who have gotten a posting/new job here need to ''risk their lives'' by hook/crook. I have read complaints from angmohs who said our border restrictions are too rigid and they could not come here to start work and have to work remotely overseas in their new job! Their unvaccinated 12-18 dependants will be vaccinated here in Singapore upon arrival.

Free ticket to India? I thought India's banned flights into their country from here? Only their own citizens can go home via India’s ''Vande Bharat Mission''.

China has imposed a 14+7 day quarantine. It'll be there until end-22. It's a mega deterrent for any tourist even if the ticket was free. Short-term visitors need a special visa/documentations to enter China. Of course there's the Regional Green Lane (Chongqing, Guangdong, Shanghai, Tianjin and Zhejiang) since last year, but that's for biz travellers with local PRC sponsors to 'vouch' for you. There's alr no SHN for those returning from Mainland China right now.

Anyway, no one wants to go to China for holidays as 17 provinces have been spooked by sporadic Delta cases.

Fully vaccinated Singaporeans will only need to serve 10 days SHN now. Am sure MTF will slowly lift the SHN restrictions after 80% is reached.

I also feel that it's quite odd that unvaccinated Taiwanese can come in without SHN. Is it cos they want to facilitate/convenience the ICT talents to come here for urgent job interviews, or officials to come here to unofficially/secretly meet with Kamala Harris? Haha, I'm a conspiracy theorist! Taiwan does seem like a privileged region which only has 2% fully vaccinated population. 😂
