Hi, can I ask if hypothetically i am accepted as a PV with home address 1-2km but within phase 2b there is still a need to ballot and I failed to get a space. During phase 2c balloting, will i be classify as <1km or 1-2km ? Thanks
-
Phase 2C will still be under 1-2km for you

Hi, I noted this thread was really some years ago but I think it’s probably good etiquette to try asking here first before starting a new topic.
My question is about PV. Do I have to stay near my preferred primary school in order to apply for PV or the <1km distance advantage only applies at ballot stage (2c).
I am > 2 km from the preferred school but I can move there to start the 30 months residential address condition upon P1 registration in 2 years’ time. However, for PV registration, I think I need to apply before Oct 2021 to clock 80 hours of PV. Please correct me if I’m wrong. I see 40 hours but someone said I got to do 2 years, so that hits me as 80 hours.
This process is really intriguing. As a parent, I find this more shiong than corporate work. Lol.
Thanks in advance for any parent who can advise me on this. -

Firstly, PV hours varies from school to school. Some schools require 40 hrs (to be completed in 1 year), others require 80 hrs (to be completed in 2 years). There's a 3rd category of schools that don't PV at all.

With regard to home-distance priority, many popular schools do ballot for SC < 1km in Phase 2B. Therefore, the obvious answer to your question is < 1km applies (in fact, it applies at all stages except Phase 1 as per MOE policy). Given the likely outcome (i.e. balloting for SC < 1km), popular schools are less likely to choose a PV > 1km from the school (let alone > 2km as is your case). I have no idea which is your preferred school but if it's a popular one, especially one that ballots yearly in Phase 2B, I would say < 1km is probably a must-have rather than a good-to-have item before even the school is willing to consider.
That said, there are special situations where a popular school *might* consider you, even if distance is a concern. One such situation is if you have special talents that the school might require, e.g. IT skills, financial literacy skills, etc, for their special projects. Hence, it's always a good idea to highlight these skills in your application form (even if they didn't ask for it. https://www.todayonline.com/big-read/big-read-not-faint-hearted-parents-jump-through-hoops-go-great-guns-secure-pri-1-spots?fbclid=IwAR3CnM3jSiPqxdZXK4-7MZGLINKyy1IF4ppjrYvyvv-OUr-MFdh0Twp62F0 had a good example of a parent who was rejected by a popular school (> 1km too far) and another school, before he called and emailed the latter to appeal, offering his technical expertise to the school (who then accepted his PV application). -

Hey, really thanks for the advice and even the article. I was just thinking to myself that PV application only provides 5 or 6 volunteer activities but frankly, I'm not quite sure that's what schools need today with Covid and all. Is there a way to highlight what I can best contribute to the students? Do I write it down in my CV and upload it? Other than the CV upload, there doesn't seem to be another option for me to indicate my \"preference\".

Different schools different requirements and no way of telling what the school wants. Sometimes, the school doesn’t know it themselves.

Not sure how you are submitting your application or how the form might look like but CV could be an option. -

Online form these days, and CV is the only option where I can \"express\" what I like to volunteer for. Thanks.

Pre-Covid, schools were open to PVs having direct contact with the kids (Eg. Reading to the less literate ones, etc) but now I believe less contact-intensive tasks like those designing open house examples are the rage. -

That’s why I said no way of telling what the school wants and sometimes, the school doesn’t know it themselves.
Apart from web designer, multimedia and content producers are also in demand. -

Managed to learn simple image editing and animation design as part of the process too!
