      Hi Mommies,

Would like to seek help for the safety of my child. I'm a working mom and I'm worried of catching COVID along the way. I'm stressed thinking I might pass it to my child upon going home. The news about increasing cases adds up to my anxiety. Would it be best to resign on my work but, it would give me more stress because there would be limited source of funds. I'm mentally stressed =( What should I do?
I’m so sorry to know u feel so anxious & stressed up with the recent cases. I can feel yr anxieties.

Delta is more transmissible & I guess we’ve not been accustomed to it. It’ll get better if we u’stand the new variants & remind ourselves not to forget the new safe-measure routines that’ll keep us all safe.

I won’t suggest u quit yr job. Steady yourself & tell yrself, “life goes on as usual”. Don’t shut yourself in as life is still interesting to work out with yr child. Sit with your child and explain to him to be alert and discipline with hygiene, hand washing & wearing masks when outside of home. Just add a little extra routine to wipe down his stationery & books, wash his toys & teach him not to share drinks or food. When u’re home, do a quick shower before you hug him or engage with him explaining clearly I love him lots but need to protect him in case some nasty pests followed u home, that u wanna wash them down the drain. All else as usual & life shldn’t hv too major a change o’wise.

Quiting is not a good solution and sounds defeatist. Will it bring more anxieties of smaller resources for the family & put more pressure & causes friction & unknowingly throw yr anxieties/anger to yr child making him feel guilty?

Truly hope you can clear yr mind & raise to the occasion to handle the situation by its horn. I’m sure u’ll recognize this challenge is sth u can overcome & ride thro well without making any decision u don’t want to live with. It’s alr hard for others who lost their jobs involuntarily, so don’t put yourself in any unlikely situation you find hard to reverse during an endemic situation. Take care.

:? Are there increasing cases? The number of cases in Singapore has been steadily dropping, right?

I think we are very blessed in SG to have a very good healthcare system and it is not anywhere near overloaded like other countries.

Please don’t allow your anxieties to overwhelm you. It’s normal to feel worried, but looking at the scientific evidence, the kids in SG recover very quickly and none of them have been seriously affected. That’s good news to look at.

We can take our precautions like wash up when we come home from work, don’t share saliva, food or drink with our kids. That’s basically the same precautions I would take if I was sick with the common flu. This will help to minimize the risk of transmission.

But other than that, it’s part & parcel of parenting that we have to let go. The world is full of dangers even non-Covid related. If u believe in a religion that gives divine protection, may help to ease your fears.

Limted source of funds may be a bigger trigger next time. So if can let yourself have more time to think about the quitting.

When you reached home. Go straight to shower. I m quite bad…if eg a repairman comes into my home…after he left I will spray sanitizer on floor and use wet tissues to wipe the the path…

For me going out short trips, I m not that careful with hair… I don’t wash hair every day unless really you are real close to someone coughing ow what.

For kids, try let them have better diet, vitamins and sleep plus manage stress.

I agree with your sharing. We do not need to treat it differently from flu, just hv to be extra vigilant w/o going overly anxious to the point of shutting ourselves totally home. I think what mindscape meant in terms of increasing cases is amongst kids.

This Delta variant seems more transmissible & kids are catching it more, unlike the covid we know fr last year. It’s not just in Spore but everywhere we hear more kids admitted to hospitals bcoz of Delta, but they do recover. We were more lax with kids tho still expect them to wear masks with last year when covid do not affect young children as much. I see many parents allow their kids to pull their masks down to chin level & children still sharing food and sharing toys. I wldnt be surprised if they pass color pencils & scissors around. So, yes, we shld heighten out kids’ consciousness with better hygiene practices & new rules in not sharing to care for each other’s health. This means parents hv to ensure their kids hv every stationery to avoid having to share with other kids.

Yes, I do the same with any visitor after they leave - wipe down doors, tables & chairs, taps & washbasins, etc 😬 Extra wirk but I don’t feel it coz to me purposeful work is fast & quickie.

I do wash my hair everyday, esp right after reaching home. I’ve learnt fr my PRC frd who passed me my 1st load of alcohol wipes when we eat out - every utensils & plates are wiped down. Guess u’ll recognize me out there if u see someone doing this (besides my PRC frd) 😅

Haha yes, I do use alcohol to wipe exposed cutlery when I feel I need be more careful. But not everytime la. Today both ate sundaes using the exposed plastic spoon 😓

I think they don't share stationery in school le but not very sure though.

Last time my younger kid use those masks without the foldable thingy on nose. Now I find using the ones with, will be better.

I have a friend who suffers from Covid anxiety and is taking medication to calm herself down before she leaves home for work each day. Maybe you can also consider getting a psychiatrist to prescribe you some medication?

Once we reopen to the outside world, travelers for business/leisure will start to flood in, we will definitely see an increase in Covid cases and be prepared that for each household, we will definitely see at least 1 member to have caught Covid, perhaps just like how we catch a flu bug. It is a sooner or later thing unless we forever live in own bubble, which is not possible. This is really beyond our control, what will be will be.

Maybe seek help from professionals (psychologist/psychiatrist)? I don’t think quitting work will help, instead, you should try to keep yourself busy to keep your mind occupied with other stuff? Quitting job alone won’t help unless you are prepared not to step out of the house?

How old is your child? Most kids don't get seriously sick even if they get Covid. And of course, you can make encourage good personal hygiene (wash hands, wear mask, etc etc). I guess your child is under preschool age and is still mostly at home, otherwise you wouldn't be so worried about bringing anything home. But there are many mothers of young kids who have been going to work daily, and not passed anything to their kids.

Are you vaccinated? If you are, your risk of catching Covid, and getting a serious case, are lower. The period of transmission from you to your child if you catch it is also of shorter duration, and hence the risk is lower.

If you are very concerned, get into the habit of changing clothes and washing your hands after you get home, BEFORE getting close to your child. Wash your hair too if it makes you feel better, though I don't really think it makes much of a difference.

The increasing no. of cases recently is a result of opening up, and the govt is only allowing it now because they know that most will only have mild symptoms or no symptoms, and the no. who will get seriously ill is going to be low. Not like a year ago when if we had 50 cases one day, it would increase every day despite those more drastic measures, and many would end up seriously ill.

Personally, if you are really worried, perhaps consult a doctor - either for more reassurance about the dangers of Covid, or for psychological support. I think that if your main reason to quite work is to avoid Covid, then you will only get more stressed staying at home. And you can't stay at home forever. Who will buy your groceries, take care of errands, etc? And surely you can't keep a child indoors and away from everyone else forever.

I see that you're from the Philippines (profile)? Are you in the healthcare sector, F&B, Hospitality or Retail sector?

You should start treating it like chicken pox already. Flu may be too short a medical leave to psychologically compare with Covid. Chicken pox MC has always been 14 days. Same downtime and hibernation (or respite!).

I feel that getting my Quarantine Order barang list ready in my mind helps me forget about that worry/fear of being locked up from the universe for 2 weeks. If your child is so unlucky to get it, you know what you can bring to keep yourselves occupied for that period. Some photos of GQFs for caregiver+child I've seen are quite nice!

I don't believe it'll be that bad as we've been fully vaccinated. The more recent you're vaccinated, the more antibodies you're supposed to have inside you. Most kids (unvaccinated/vaccinated) have no symptoms. So you just need to relax in a decent GQF hotel (hopefully with nice bathtub to soak in if you don't have OCD!).

Your worry could be due to potential loss of income or even job, I don't know? Does the govt still pay $100 per day for 14 days of QO?
