fr p4 to p5 .. results dropped
-
The jump from p4 to p5 is something they may not have experienced and, thus may find it hard to adjust to the "higher" level of expectations. That happened to my kids and it took a while for them to really adjust. Expect sudden drop in grades for some of the subjects like Science for my kids.

Those kids who had been streamed to the HA classes in P5 are having a big shock after WA3 (EL: Paper 2, CL: Compre, HCL: non-picture Compo) and the parents are panicking big time too. Previously the kids had been doing well in P1-4 but now that the requirements are tougher, they seem to fumble.

Out of curiosity, you mean the papers for HA classes different from other classes?

Er, no the papers are the same. Just maybe the parents were too used to seeing near-perfect marks and now more like average marks or failed.

I think as parents we also need to adjust to the expectations as our kids go up the levels. Things get tougher and by maintaining the existing grades are already an achievement by itself. However, if the drop is too drastic, we should look at whether the learning methods are incorrect, or look for help/other ways to assist them in learning. Different kids will have their own best method in learning or absorbing concepts.

Think of it this way and maybe people will feel better.
P5 SA2 = PSLE Practice #1 (some add’l content added in P6 but not too much more)
P6 SA1 = PSLE Practice #2
Prelim = PSLE Practice #3
PSLE = test that matters.
I.e. it is most important to be "winning," or more broadly, "where you need to be" at the end. It is hard to operate if every test is the "most important" test, cannot screw up, etc. Take each one before PSLE as an official notice on where you can try to improve… -

I attended a P5 webinar by a former PSLE setter/marker and she said (for Science) that 90% of the PSLE tested content is actually taught (and tested in SA2) by end of P5.

I think English is pretty much the same. Possibly the inference questions in comprehension are a bit more advanced and the range of never ending vocabulary could be a bit wider, but more or less it's the same test. For MT, I guess there is additional vocabulary that is specifically added in P6 on needs to learn.SG_KP1\" post_id=\"2037461\" time=\"1631332225\" user_id=\"188234:

For Math and Science, it will be interesting to see if the CLTs are added back next year? If not, I wonder if they will declare upfront so Term 1-2 can focus on catching up on prior material? Or they will see how the year is going before making any final decision (if no disruptions and student absences are down they may take next year to bite the bullet and get everyone back on track :yikes: ) .
Regardless, first step is another week plus of focus for the 2010 kiddos and then some time to relax! -
For English, I don’t think there’s much difference between P5 and P6. In fact, DS was already practising on PSLE papers as the answer booklet is far more enlightening & educational than those awful answers from the free school exam papers.
I know DS school Science & Math teachers are already planning to teach the “missed” P5 topics after the SA2s are over, and before year-end holidays start. So they won’t be losing out on content knowledge at least. Whether or not the P6 Term 1 test will be testing these topics is still unknown, but we should prepare for it anyway, cos I don’t see any true harm.
