Well, you are using algebra leh. No mark given leh.
      Why no mark given ?

      In Psle Maths National exam,
as long as one can use any creative method to solve Maths problem, and systematically show the steps logically step by step, marks will be awarded. Yes, inclusive of \"Algebra \" method used. Algebra method is used in Secondary schools, Sec 1

Helen and Ivan had the same number of coins. Helen had a number of 50-cent coins and 64 20-cent coins. These coins had a mass of 1.134 kg. Ivan had a number of 50-cent coins and 104 20-cent coins .

        (a) Who has more money in coins and by how much?(2)

        (b) given that each 50-cent coin is 2.7g more heavier than a 20-cent coin, what is the mass of Ivan’s coins in kilograms? (2)
        Explanation :
104 - 64 = 40 (Ivan has 40 less 50 cent coins than Helen while Helen has 40 less 20 cent coins than Ivan)
        M1
        (0.5 - 0.2 = 0.3

        a) 40 x 0.3 = 12)

        M2
        (0.5 x 40 = 20
        0.2 x 20 = 8
        a) 20 - 8 = 12)

        40 x 2.7 = 108

        108 g = 0.108 kg

        b) 1.134 - 0.108 = 1.026

        a) Helen had $12 more.
        b) The mass of his coins is 1.026 kg.

Can I check something. For the secondary posting exercise after PSLE results are out, will the secondary schools update their indicative COP (in AL terms) or do we just have to follow what’s the current indicative ALs on MOE school finder now? Thanks!

Algebra is allowed, it's in the syllabus

It is strictly not allow in problem solving. you will get only answer mark but not working mark.

I believe the all the P6 teacher has highlight this issue to the students many times. Strictly NO algebra allow, else no mark will be given for the working.

I don't think they will update anything. Technically, I'm not sure what they could even update because the actual AL COP will only be known after this year's students have their scores and make their selections. There is really no way to come up with an indicative level based on just this year's PSLE scores (in AL terms).

As to the issue of papers being easy/hard (or in other terms cohort scoring well/not as well) and how this impacts the COPs, it would give people a strong guide/roadmap if they said X% of cohort = AL4, Y% of cohort = AL5, etc, etc. But I doubt they will do that. The variation of year to year scores and how this moves COPs is just something to live with in the AL system.

Is this the most difficult one?

if it is, then the paper is not difficult.

Those indicative COP (in AL score) is only a ROUGH tentative guide, based on last year 2020 Psle batch, not the actual COP yet.

In other words, u got to work with these Rough guide, to choose your 6 schools.

When will you know the actual AL COP, for each Secondary school?

Only in the month of December, AFTER the entire S1 posting exercise (AL score) is over, then u will know the 2021 actual COP, per Secondary school.

The P6 algebra taught is very basic. The school taught using heuristics method and if your son use other method not taught in school, he will be given only answer marks. It is unfair to other students who did not learn advance algebra other than taught in school.

Use algebra to get answer mark only unless you can't do solve it using heuristics.
