Nothing to be confused of. Very simple. Apply what the teacher taught your kids and not apply what you teach your kids. Share with us which school teacher told you so.

Parents are the one pushing the kids to use algebra derive from sentence to solve it. they are the one not align with the school using the heuristic method in solving the maths questions.

I believe your kids told you many times but most parents choose to be in denial.
Oops. My son is already in year 2 University so he won't be of much help.

To say that parents are \"pushing\" their kids to use algebra is assume parents are all well trained in algebra, which is hard to imagine.

The fact that many problems in psle can be easily solved by algebra shows that the examiners are preparing the kids for their upcoming adventures with \"algebra\".

So I still don't understand why kids should be punished for \"daring\" to use algebra. It is just how they can quickly solve the problem. Why punish a child when he gets the correct answer, although he may not have done it in the manner taught by the teacher?

A blessed morning to all fellow parents!
Can any experienced parents/wise ppl in this KSP forum share their top tips for how to revise the coming CL papers with their DS/DD (i.e. what/where/which specific areas to focus on and speculated topic for this year's pictures compo etc), please help... thanks a lot!

This will be my advice for tomorrow's preparation: https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=84699&p=1874232&hilit=chenlaoshi#p1874212

You may find this https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=85&t=95548&start=60#p2039448 useful too.

All the best to the Pri 6s for their remaining papers! :rahrah:

          Thank you for sharing ChenLaoShi!

Extract from the above link as posted….

          Paper 1 Compo
          - Prioritize on recap of the adjectives and descriptive phrases (minimal 1 for each type) that can be used for feelings (happy, angry, panic/scared, embarrassed, tired, scared) and common actions (walking happily, walking hastily, running, scolding, apologizing). If time permits, then weather and appearance too.
          - If the child has memorized any opening and/or closing paragraphs, get them to practice writing them out without any 错别字 (very wasteful to have marks deducted for these kind of 'fixed' content which they should have been very used to and familiar with)

          Paper 2 Written Paper
          - Make use of the bilingual list at the back of P6 and P5 textbooks for revision. Child can do self directed learning by covering the column with English translation/meaning. Circle or ticked out those that he/she didn't know the meaning of. That will help sieve out the ones which require more attention. Prior to the paper on Mon (i.e. over the weekend, focus on those 'sieved out' words/phrases.
          - Practice on 短文填空,阅读理解(一),完成对话 and 阅读理解(二)A组. These sections are all MCQ (+1 note writing question) thus do not take up that much time. They are also very much 'score-able' and there's every possibility that a child can score close to full marks out of the 38 available (10+8+10+10). If the P6 past yr school exam papers have already been completed, turn to the P5 papers instead. Certain words/phrases are commonly repeated in the 阅读理解(二)A组 section - e.g. 截止日期、详情、首50名、获得礼包etc. so the child will get familiarized and know where to check for information. Meanwhile, reading and understanding the passages in 短文填空,阅读理解(一)can indirectly prepare them for 阅读理解(二)B组.

Jokes aside, I find the surest and best-est way of improving Chinese is to master the following words: “飞雪连天射白鹿,笑书神侠倚碧鸳”. Once you complete this set of 武林秘籍, Chinese confirm upgrade by at least 10 levels.

Holy crap. I can only see some white snow shoot at some white deer, some laughing book hero riding some critter. What it means... I have to climb Mount Everest to find out. :udaman:

Hi parents, I’m wondering if the cut off points for streaming into secondary schools will change with increasing difficulty of the papers. Will students who get 23-24 also get into express if number of students who get scores of 22 or below is less than the number of spaces in schools? I understand that cutoff may be different for individual schools, but I’m more concerned about the overall streaming boundaries. Any thoughts appreciated. Thank you!

No. I believe the cut offs for the streams are fixed by MOE, non-negotiable. At least there has been no change announced in tandem with the new AL system.

If in doubt, maybe write in to MOE to ask/appeal?

Out of 39000 kids attempted paper on Fri, the voices mostly heard here are one sided. So to be fair to the exam setter, we need to hear from the others too.

No parents or kids are trying to be boastful or have no empathy.

Imagine new p5 parents reading the posts here and really believe that the papers are out to get their children?
The beneficiaries are the profit earning tuition centres.

Many parents are not complaining because they can accept AL2 or AL3, and that not all kids can get AL1.

From what I see, the small samples limited of kids I know, those in AL4 and AL5 are not even in this forum.

From a parent who has not asked kid in details abt maths papers hence no idea if he has done well or not.

Just sharing own point of view, no offence intended. Was telling another parent, we were lucky that kids managed to reach the end of paper, knowing a few kids cannot finish paper, missing 1 or 2 qns meant losing 8 marks. The kids who cried are aiming AL1 or pass, no one knows for sure.

Check this out, Kim Huat’s funny clip on PSLE math 2021

                      https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ueo9Cu5gPdk

Think this year, there were more discussions of students crying. My DD also have classmates crying when the paper ended. Generally, students don’t cry over 1 to 2 difficult questions. But if stuck at an early question, and ended up half of the paper not finished, anyone would cry.

This AL system is even more stressful. What used to be an A is split into AL2 & AL3. Students and parents unconsciously deem AL3 as not good, and everyone trying to get AL2. But it is still an A! During my time, getting an A is a happy thing! Now there is a new band of ‘not so good’ A! Adding extra stress.

This reminds me of my daughter, she cried every single day after each PSLE paper - total 5days (+ HMT). But again, she’s the type that would cry every year during exam, or over the slightest thing.

2 of my friend’s child 2015 PSLE candidate saw the Helen question and both confirmed they had done something similiar - the infamous $1 coin question as they put it.

One went into express, the other Normal. Now both studying in Polytechnic.

                        Edit:
Background of student A (express): No tuition
Student D (Normal): Tuition for Eng, math and science.
Both from same primary school, different class. Class A and D

Student D and parent went into stress mode. Parent rant alot which somehow made me freak out a little bit what if its my turn next? Is PSLE that tough? It got me worried too.
Student D got a choice to choose Express or NA. Parent insist on Express but some of us advised to go for Normal instead. Student went on to NA, completed his N levels and skipped the O’s. Straight to Poly. He done so so well for his N’s.
Some children are just late bloomers.
