For HCL, in Sec 2, the student will be learning more new techniques and information as compared to Sec 1 - such as 议论文、说明文、病句改正(if it was covered in Sec 1, then it's in paragraph form instead of individual sentences) and even 片段缩写 and 论坛(for 实用文). So Thus, the transition is a little little like from Pri 4 to Pri 5 (coverage and components wise). Therefore, like Zeal mummy suggested, I would suggest seeking the opinion of the school teacher and tutor, as opposed to just deciding based on gradings/marks (since learning and mastering these require a bit more time - slower/finding it challenging initially doesn't necessary mean weak/not able to handle).
If a child is already having tuition but barely passing the Sec 2 EOY exam for HCL, is it a better idea to drop to Normal chinese in Sec 3, rather than struggle further and most likely can’t get pass Sec 3 exam and ultimately still have to drop to normal chinese in sec 4?

Hi,
Can anyone share which centre is good for Secondary Higher Chinese? Preferably not a big group and near Toa Payoh area. Thanks a lot! -
For 作文, If the topic is you don’t usualLy plan and after the incident you learnt planning is impt . And they child writes how not planning made him fail the exam . Is it out of topic ? I was thinking need to write how planning helped the 我 to succeed

After the “you don’t usually plan”, was it stated that “this time you did something different” (or something along this line to suggest this time was not like before)?

If not, it is alright to “learnt planning is important” after reflecting upon that incident. -

Qn started with you usually don’t plan . Then 经过这件事后, 你明白了要计划才能成功。

How will the qn suggest this time you did something different ? Usually how is it phrased ?

RI 2021 Sec 3 EOY Paper 1's forum reply question was regarding 在小贩中心用餐后须自行归还托盘和碗碟的条例(Enforcement for table littering)and 材料新闻 topic was on 新加坡清洁日(SG Clean Day). These topics were covered in both 逗号 and 前线追踪 (e.g.: https://fb.watch/8qShq8tSk0)
Yup, definitely, that's the fundamental that has to be taken care of. Was just highlighting that unlike Pri level CL, relying on syllabus text alone will not be sufficient to do well for Sec level HCL.kylene\" post_id=\"2011540\" time=\"1610238008\" user_id=\"6993:
Thank you for taking the time to explain !
My DS is in Sec 1 now so I suppose he still needs to know the textbook words to a certain extent .
Any suggestions how we can prepare for the HCL Os ? Thanks so much !
(1) Read up in order to expand range of vocab, learn language expression as well as gain knowledge regarding issues/topics. Some materials to consider include:
https://yuyi.com.sg/collections/chinese-books-recommended-reading-list-for-sji-lower-secondary/products/9789814861694
https://www.zaobao.com.sg/keywords/dou-hao-0magazine (made compulsory by some schools)
Lower Sec: https://yuyi.com.sg/collections/magazines/products/10099301-2021
Upper Sec: https://yuyi.com.sg/collections/magazines/products/16734955-21
(2) Watch and listen - again, get to improve on language skills + gain knowledge. Especially useful in preparation for oral practice since HCL oral exam has a 口头报告 component where student need to watch, listen and take down notes during the preparation period. HCL oral video also includes \"people being interviewed\" at times. Programmes like 前线追踪 and 星期二特写 are informative and up to date - very useful for working on email writing, discursive writing and oral conversation.
If parents have the time to accompany their child in watching the programme, they can have some light hearted discussion too - family time + working on verbal skills.
A lot of the writing by upper Sec requires expression of views so being exposed to various topics is a big plus (pointers for content + saves time trying to squeeze out ideas/thoughts).
For example, I was covering the topic of 小贩文化/申遗 (Singapore's hawker culture added to Unesco list) a couple of weeks ago and used 前线追踪's 1 Jan 2021 issue which covered related content as useful additional/after lesson material for the students.

(3) Holistic and all rounded approach in learning. Doing cloze passage doesn't mean you are practicing for cloze passage only, likewise for compre. Have https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8835&start=600#p2002580 of how students can pick up skills/information useful for compo writing while practicing on compre. Have a notebook to jot down good descriptive phrases, proverbs and quotable quotes that you come across from passages in various exercises.
I'm quite sure topics tested in other schools/levels' exams are mostly covered via these channels too. Do encourage your children to spend time reading/watching them.

May I know for HCL in secondary school, does a kid need to score at least what AL? Also for a kid that was with normal Chinese in primary school, is it very challenging to pick HCL? Thank you.
