Difficult complain, Easy also complain.

Whether can get into top school depends on your kids calibre. You have to assess yr kids capability and put them in suitable schools.

Not die die must go RI/ NYGH, HCI etc.

Couldn't agree more...unfortunately most parents think top 4 schools only or else may as well go to neighbourhood school....they don't believe in inbetweens

Ya. If those happened to get AL4/5 turns out to be more of a fluke, seriously still must consider kids overall ability....else may lose self-esteem in big 4.
Agree. Having had kids in the top 4...I can't emphasise enough....you better be sure your kid is that calibre or else the pressure and being surrounded by the cream can really kill your self esteem. These kids don't need the hardest concepts explained ....they literally pick up as its being taught the first time. No explanation required. They literally come home and recap. I've never given tution to either of my kids nor do they ask for help. Both have excelled. Not bragging just explaining the calibre that's required. The thing is that their syllabus is mostly year 5 year 6 jc level work. Good luck with it

When my child comes back and claims it's easy, I worry 😄

Ya I would worry too....easy no good. Many will get AL 1 how to discriminate ....you want a harder paper so you don't need to ballot for top schools

I don't quite believe that there's no moderation in each subject's marks, so the number of students achieving AL1 is probably not as many as some think.
No moderation. Moe already clarified this. Its based on your kids actual raw marks.

IMO, hard or easy is not going to eliminate balloting under the new AL system. If the papers are hard, a school that is normally AL6 may ballot at AL7. Conversely, if the papers are easy the same school may ballot at AL5. However, there is likely to be some balloting in all three scenarios.

I have no idea if the papers were easy or hard as I didn't take them nor do I have a single kid that took both of them (this year and last year). I would just add that last year everyone thought the papers were easy but the simulated AL COPs were basically what people expected (IP AL6-AL8/9, no AL5s). So maybe not as many people score as high as perceived or the papers weren't as easy as every kid thought.

Obviously, there is no point to have a paper where every question is 1+1 = 2 (everyone gets 100) or conversely the A Level F Math Paper (most of the cohort gets 0). Last year the papers seem to produce a reasonable distribution of scores and reading all of the comments taken together that is likely the case again this year.

Congrats to those who are finished. Good luck to those who have HMT tomorrow.

Not possible to eliminate the risk of balloting completely, however a difficult paper can help minimize the number of students balloting.

e.g. RGS or RI indicative COP is AL6

If easy paper, more AL6 = more AL6 applicants because everyone is using AL6 as an indicator during application.
This mean, there will be more people balloting within AL6 COP.

If difficult paper, less A6 = less AL6 applicants = higher chance for AL6.
Furthermore indicative AL COP from 2020 is AL6, I would believe that most AL7 student will not try. Although some will still give it a shot and hope this year will be AL7.

This assumes the actual COP stays at AL6. If the papers are so easy, there are more AL6s most likely that means there will be more AL5s too. Enough of them and RI/RGS will be full at AL5. The exact opposite if the papers are really hard (not full at AL6 because there simply aren't that many students scoring there).

These are more extreme examples and on the margin what you describe is accurate. I.e. there were 200 spots at RGS for AL6 with 250 applicants. This year papers easy, so 175 spots (a few more AL5s) and 300 AL6s. Of course, this is just a dummy example - I'm not making a claim as to any of the above being true in reality.

😓 We are just aiming for a good nearby neighborhood school.

Probably the safest bet now....thank god my kids got into top schools with tscore...! This new AL big XXXXX....I suspect many ambitious ones gonna end up in neighbourhood schools they didn't apply for. unless you get AL4 don't try top schools....Good luck

Hopeful still stand a chance coz my girl already had to work hard to improve her AL to meet the cut off. Else have to travel further for other neighborhood school, so hoping she makes it in for convenience sake.

totally agree! looking at past few days comments, looking at so many parents complaining at MOE fb ,...... im wondering, if all kids scoring AL1 for all subjects, is this what we want? everyone just have to use pandemic as excuses and all kids get a chance to try RI, NYG, HC..........

Ha... ironic. Pitchforks were out in force just a couple of days ago.
MOE was the big bad guy and CCS was being called out left, right, centre for being evil, uncaring, driving kids to suicide.

Whichever policy is in place, they can’t please everyone.
Those at the top will want the papers to be hard to sieve out the potential competitors. Wun-wun-jia-bee-hoon go into their dream top schools.
Those who are on the borderline will want the papers to be easier so they have a chance to squeeze into the said top schools.
Those who are below that will want the papers to be super easy so that it is fair and everyone has a chance – even balloting also shiok.
And some just want to get by so that their kids can manage the stress and are not interested in the competition in which they are the collateral damage.

At the end of the day, RI only has X number of places. Whether it is the T-score or AL band or some future magic formula, they can only accept X students so there needs to be a cut-off somewhere.
The alternative is rebrand all the schools; either number them Schools #1, #2, …. Or just have one massive RI with branches throughout Singapore la.

If you really went through PSLE 2020 papers, Math and English easy, CL moderate, Sci considered tricky. Based on what the parents said should have a lot a lot AL4/5. But no school cut off at 5. If this is based on raw score, then this year should be similar. If without modifications, then this year posting really based on luck.

Yes, PSLE Science paper was very easy this year according to a student who is weak in Science.
