Be prepared for the 'means' of Math and Chinese to be close to \"80\", that is, if a kid gets 80 marks, in term of T-score, he/she has \"just passed\".
Why you say if one's score = mean, he/she 'just passed'. I'd interpret it as this child's result for that subject is just AVERAGE compared to the whole cohort. It also an indication that if this child wants to be in the top few % then he has to work much harder.

In fact, I felt that SD also provides valuable & meaningful info besides mean. For calculation of T-score, SD is a very crucial factor. So I still disagree that if score = mean, then by t-score its only a just pass.

          so so lah

:? what i mean is - i'm interested to know what mean and SD you used for T-score computation

          o i c!

the mean and SD is specific to the cohort in the school and is different for each subject in each exam

for P5, the mean ranges from 65 to 75 and the SD ranges from 9 to 17, cohort size approx 400, excluding GEP

the numbers are similar for P6 SA1, and the median is higher than the mean

all the numbers are from the school[/quote]thanks for the info !

If a child gets the \"mean\" scores for all 4 subjects, his aggregate T-score will be 200 points which is the base level needed to get into \"express\" for a reasonable school.

I should have rephrased it as \"just pass to get into express\". My apology.

Means and SD from school results needs to be adjusted for the standard of the school vs national average. So whilst most schools average 200, the top schools would be in region of 230+.

Unfortunately my child's school does not provide SD but a graphical distribution of marks so need to manually estimate the SD. Just to check if my estimates are in the ball park, maths is generally the one with the high SD (say 12-18) and the others are lower (say 8-12)? This would be for P5 and P6 CA, SAs.

                    Au,

U need to have the mean and the Standard deviation of ur cohorts in ur school. Most schools dot give SD but probably give u the class ave
So u cannot calculate the T-score

If you convert your score out of 400 to out of 300, you can find your raw score. If you get an A* it i most likely your overall percentage for t-score would be an A*

                        Hi MOE Hater

The above method for estimating aggregate used to be quite accurate in the past as the \"means\" of all subjects were around 70 to 75. However, it is not so anymore. With the increase in the \"means\" for math and Chinese, any student who does not perform well enough in either of these subjects will find their aggregate T-score being pulled down disproportionately. My friends' kids suffered such fate last year. A low \"A\" in any one of those 2 subjects can bring the overall T-score down by as much as 5 to 10 points, compared to a student with the same results in the past. The drop will be greater when the standard deviation is bigger.
