Hi parents,
My boy is currently in CHS Y4. Can you all enlighten me about the subject combinations for Y5 in EJC? Is there a minimum criteria to achieve for Maths or Sci subject in order to stay within the Sci stream in Y5 and eventually take A levels?

Ask your son to refer there.
For St Nick,
all promotional Y4 criteria into Y5, are clearly stated inside the students’ diary / handbook.
E.g.
What minimum grade must be acquired at the end of Y4 EOY exam, before one can do Y5 H2 Physics (A-level)
You can Google Y5 subject combination yourself, at EJC school website,

This type of common info available, not only your son (IP) need, but O-level candidates applying for EJC Year 1, will also need as well.

The subject combination and prerequisite can be found on the school website. But if you have specific questions, you can email the school. I have found them to be very open about answering academic subject related questions. And asking the school is definitely most accurate too.

We only realised subsequently when we looked into EJC website. This wasn’t comms to us before and as a first-time parent, I wasn’t aware either. For Sci stream, Chem seems to be a compulsory subject. If the student does not meet the minimum criteria for a particular subject, any idea if appeal is possible? Thanks all in advance for the sharing.

You can do double maths and physics in S3, or just physics and maths in S5. Chemistry is not compulsory.

I studied in EJC as a JAE student and was from the class of 2020. The IP-JAE divide is definitely true and it was quite bad back then. I’m not sure how bad it is currently but I think that this problem exist across all the IPJCs. I can only speak from my experience so I would say that I was fortunate to have made really good friends in my class. But I’ve also seen worse IP-JAE divides in other classes. Ultimately, the aim of going to a JC is to study hard and do well for A levels, not chasing after popularity and make 200 friends. I mean, it certainly helps to make many new friends in JC as a form of social support but at the end of the day when you graduate from JC there are only a few people you’ll still stick around with. If I remember correctly, the school has been doing something about it and has toned down the IP orientation significantly so I guess it might not be so bad in the future. As for the A level results, it is quite unfair to generalise the whole IP cohort as pulling up the mean/median UAS while the JAE pulls down the mean/median UAS.
From what I’ve observed from my friends/classmates, my IP friends learn things faster (some of them work even harder) but there are also some who lacks the discipline to sit down and study. As for the JAEs, we may not learn as fast but many of us still works equally hard, if not harder than the IPs because we know we’re coming from less, so we have to do more. Nevertheless, this didn’t really matter towards prelim the school have already challenged us to the absolute core and everyone’s just struggling and was fighting for their life. I still believe a large proportion of JAE students do well too, we’ve went through O level to fight for the remaining seats left in this JC and of course we are more experienced with national exam conditions. Though I am a JAE who did worse than my IP counterparts in JC1, I worked really hard in JC2, still managed to score 90RP and have earned a spot in NUS YLLsoM. -

I have a friend who teaches at EJC - what I was told is that IP students don’r necessarily do well. Among those who are retained in JC1, there is always a mix of IP and JAE students. I do believe the IP JAE divide exists in every IP JC. Not sure why EJC gets particularly singled out for this.
Would you mind if I ask what your views are on the teachers and teaching quality? Are the teachers experienced and prepare students well for A levels? Also, are they supportive of students in overseas universities, Med/Law applications, scholarship applications etc?

I think all IP students learn things fast in different aspect, some are more inclined to science while some are more inclined to the linguistic side. I think the reason why some IP students don't necessarily do well is because they probably lack the discipline to study/ went into relationship and broke up? (many top students see a plunge in their grades because of relationship problems). As for JAE students who didn't do well it's most likely due to them not being able to catch up with the insane speed of content taught. Well I could be wrong since this is only based on my observation as a student in EJ. I think Ej gets particularly singled out for this is due to the spotlight it's getting currently- the new campus and the peculiar school name given. Many people wants to see how EJ will perform in the coming years. Of course there are some with red eyes hence the exaggerated comments.
I think that the GP BCME departments are all amazing. There are definitely a few inexperienced teachers who are 'meh' but most of the teachers really know their stuff well and are really helpful when it comes to 1-1 consult. I think the problem lies in that the inexperienced teachers may not teach effectively in a class setting, but they are really helpful when it comes to 1-1 explanation/consultation.
Some papers set in EJ are reasonably difficult- math, bio, GP, economics.
Some papers set in EJ are meant to destroy you, like the chemistry papers because they really managed to destroy the entire cohort ;(
Nevertheless the resources, notes and practices given are more than enough for me to revise and practice. I think they have certainly prepared us well for the A levels. EJ sends a couple of students overseas to renowned universities- I have 2 friends who got into Oxford med and Oxford engineering, while I have seen some high flyers in my cohort who goes on to study law in UCL, molecular biomedical engineering in imperial college London with a national science scholarship. I didn't apply for overseas university but I recalled somewhere between MYE and prelims they asked if anyone is interested to study abroad and some of my friends went- they had their testimonials written earlier and had their grades predicted, so on and so forth.
As for med/law applications and scholarship applications I don't know much (sorry) but I only know that they provide workshops held by seniors and ECG counsellors to share about the application process and insights about them the day after the A lvl results but I didn't go for them because I was busy celebrating with my family -

Very relieved to hear that the GP BCME departments are strong. I did hear the same from another BCME student. My DD is however, likely to read PME+a Humanities subject. Hopefully, the teachers are good too. That’s actually my biggest concern - the teaching quality.
Do you think the A level results will improve as the COP of EJC has so called, gotten better after it moved to the new campus?
Why made you choose EJC over other JCs? I actually think EJC will have a hard time attracting JAE students, given the negative comments online (sad to read them and I do wonder if they are exaggerated) and that it is after all, a new kid on the block without a strong historical track record. Did you find the JAE students super clique-ish? -
What about the geo and lit teachers? Mine is thinking of doing science science maths and geo/lit.
