May I know for HCL in secondary school, does a kid need to score at least what AL? Also for a kid that was with normal Chinese in primary school, is it very challenging to pick HCL? Thank you.
The requirement to take HMT in Secondary School is:
      a) AL8 or better or
      b) AL9 - AL14 AND i) AL1 or AL2 in Primary MT or ii) Distinction/Merit in Primary HMT.

Note, I believe some SAP schools will have all the Sec 1 kids take HCL regardless of whether they qualify via a) or b) above.

Yea, some sap schools I know will make it mandatory to do HCL. It’s good to try out if your kid is interested. 2 bonus point off when going JC if the kid pass in Sec4.

My child with Busybee. Showed good improvement. The nearest branch will be Sin Ming for you.

Hi, could someone recommend me a good tutor for HCL? My DS just failed his HCL so we urgently need a good one. Thanks in advance.

Chinese is never a problem in my family as we all enjoy reading Chinese Novel which we borrowed from National Library. Boys love to read Martial Arts Novel and girls engross in Romance and Detective Stories. And we even write Chinese when we whatsapp to each other. We all get a good exam result in Chinese.

Not sure what your kid's timetable is like but I noticed with HCL classes only three days per week it is not easy to maintain a high standard. I encouraged my kid to read more, write down and lookup new words you don't fully understand, and practice writing when time permits.

I am not 100% sure but my general impression is that many things in secondary school require more effort than just doing what the teacher assigns if you want to excel (assuming you are not a subject genius). HCL, especially with relatively fewer hours of instruction vs the primary days, is no exception. Of course, there is no need to excel in everything so it will partly depend where the kid wants to spend his/her time and brainpower.

Yup, sounds cliche, but really need to 多读 and 多写(and even 多听 to aid understanding and retention)- to expand range of vocab as well as improve on language expression.
