Thanks for the feedback, Lego. The program does look enriching. And yes, dd will go attend the briefing & see how it goes. :xedfingers:
Dd was in gate bio but it was pre-covid times when she first joined it, so I am not sure what could have changed.
The school will provide the updated information on what the program entails and commitment (if any) in the briefings.
Btw, my girl signed up for the “sample lesson” back then.
If your girl is interested after the briefings and sample lesson, just go for the selection test. The school will do the necessary to assess the student.
Don’t know how much of it is still valid as of now but commitments during dd’s time:- some self-study is required, electives in the form of workshops/seminars/learning journeys were conducted in the thursday afternoons, have to do research and participate in smtp/gate fair, you are not allowed to withdraw from the program nor are the students allowed to drop from 4H2 to 3H2.
The students were free to choose electives that were available to all the students in the smtp/gate program, unless it was explicitly stated otherwise that certain pre-requisite was required for these electives.
So you can be in gate biology class and choose an elective workshop on chemistry of coffee or cosmetics, workshop on unmanned technologies (drones), visit and tour the Institute of High Performance Computing, something like that.
She doesn’t regret joining the program. All the best! -

My Dd is in JC1 at HC. According to my Dd, the GATE program is generally manageable. In fact, it stretches them well and appropriate because in the Covid times now, they no longer have electives to go out of school to learn different things. Instead, the enrichment is mostly done by the teachers allocated to the class during their explanations or lecturing in class. So in that sense, it’s more flexible. As for research project, they have a compulsory one called the SMTP-GATE project where they have to come up with an area of interest and produce a research report on that. This project will be graded and replaces 5% of your entire year’s grade. There will be curriculum time allocated on a Thursday every 2 weeks in my DD’s case where time is blocked out for them to do the project, so managing the commitment level wise, it is still alright. You are not allowed to withdraw from the program if you cannot cope. Generally, if the school selects your Dd, it should mean that coping in the SMTP-GATE program shouldn’t be too much of an issue. My DD’s CT is pretty confident none of them in her class has issues coping, all are coping decently well. But how well you would define as coping well would depend on individual levels’ commitment in other areas such as leadership / CCA / SL project as well as the individual’s expectation level. Learning is mostly self paced and a lot of independent studying, pace is usually manageable but if the class is faster then the pace will be faster. Hope this helps. My Dd doesn’t regret joining. Met a bunch of supportive and like-minded classmates so it’s pretty amazing. Just continue coping til JC2
Thanks for the feedback, Dawn. I will let dd explore few options and see how it goes. . :xedfingers:Ganjiongspider\" post_id=\"2043361\" time=\"1634888913\" user_id=\"102810:
Hi Dawn,
Dd is in GATE program. If your daughter is invited to join the program (DSA), then be sure that it is a good fit for her. Otherwise, mostly the students that meet the criteria will take the selection tests and the school will make use of both the performance in the selection tests as well as the students’ school examination performance to make a holistic decision on accepting the student into the program or not. As for the way of learning in the program, it depends on which SMTP/GATE class you are allocated because the extensions are mostly done by teachers so they will pace the extensions according to the class’s performance. For instance, my Dd is in GATE Chemistry, in this case she takes the biology lectures with other classes but she does not take the chemistry ones with the cohort. Instead, her teacher will guide them through the topics briefly and extend where he sees it applicable.
Is your dd this year JC1 or JC 2 at HC? From your opinion, is the GATE programme manageable- how much time, individual/group research, projects are involved? Can the student withdraw from the programme in the event cannot cope with it? My dd is not under DSA, as she is S4 @ NYGH promoting to HCJC next year. Currently the school is sending emails about all kinds of scholarships & special programmes to apply. I am more worried the tougher part of learning experience once she is in any of the programmes , as it is more fast paced & advanced. :faint: I am also not so sure if she is really a good fit even if she gets through the criterial/selection test. She always have that sudden motivation & enthusiasm in something, but hard to stay through.

May I ask for Advance subject Science test, are the girls expected to know upper secondary work ? My girl told me she applied. I am wondering if there is a need to prepare for it. Any experienced parents can advice ?

Out of curiousity, do NYGH girls need to fulfil a certain criteria to take 4H2s at Year 5? HCI sets a criteria of MSG<2.5 for their boys to qualify to read 4H2s. If MSG>3, need to reexam.

Same. MSG3 or below to progress to Year5. For 4H2, MSG below 2.5. MSG calculated using L2R5.

Cool. okay the HCI MSG includes all subjects (can't take out lousiest lol) - the exception is 3rd language and PW - these are included if they help your MSG. At least for this year, I don't think HCI made the exams too demanding or what.

I am not too sure about this year but last year in the midst of covid, they still have graduation night but it was a very muted event held in sch and in each class only with mass video screening or smthg. The girls still get to dress up but I guess the vibes were very different to pre-covid times. Last year HCI boys still get to hold theirs in hotel but catered japanese bento instead I heard 😅. With increased SMM this year, not sure what are the plans. -
I read from school website that "Students who are eligible for Academic Special Programmes are only allowed to take one Special Programme." and the ASP includes SMTP and even 3rd language. Does it mean students who are interested in SMTP will have to give up 3rd language ? any one here takes both SMTP and 3rd lang ? Not sure if I understand this correctly. TIA !

There are specifically 6 special programmes and none of them includes 3rd language. So, yes, should be able to take SMTP and 3rd language.

Special programmes and 3rd language are not mutually exclusive. The real consideration is the workload. It is not advisable to take 10 subjects. So if one is taking 3 Sciences (with 2 at Advanced level), plus 2 humanities, definitely not advisable to take 3rd language as the 10th subject.
