I think you must reread HC's post. It talks about excess deaths and replacement deaths. There's a +/- effect so it balances out...?
+ because Covid does hasten the death of some unvaccinated /vulnerable seniors.
Yet it is also - cos the SMMs also postpone (or render some 'reprieve') deaths of some vulnerable who'd have otherwise died earlier from the annual influenza, pneumonia, etc., had it not been those mandatory masks and safe distancing. UK's NHS publishes excess death rates also. Covid results in excess deaths.

But that is precisely what they are saying - if not for the tightened measures, our death rate might be as high as many other countries that reacted more slowly and less hard. The death rate would be much higher if Covid had been allowed free reign. They aren't saying that they disabled the Covid virus, just that their measures prevented many deaths.

HK will soon be opening borders with mainland. It's ok if the ordinary HKrs dont need to travel for work, but not so for the expats. We have over 4,200 regional HQs based in Singapore and if you don't let expats and biz travellers travel with ease, they may quit Singapore soon. My next of kin's been stuck in HK since Jan 2020 cos no employer would allow staff to take that many days leave. If you disappear for 14-21 days quarantine + home visit duration, your job could be in danger.

Agree. Even though they are doing it for their BS political reasons.

But the end result may be very low death rate, because so many antivirals and new vaccines have been announced.

By the time China's 2022 Winter Olympic is over and Hong Kong opens up, all these life saving medicines will be readily available and HK will open up with very little fatalities.

Do you mean the spike number of cases and death in Singapore are mainly due to the ease of travellers and experts? In front of a pandemic, we need to give up some of our freedom.

The Merck pill was announced sometime 1 Oct. We have still not seen anything yet. The Pfizer pill was just revealed to us and is in an experimental setting. When do you think we will have it in hospitals for treating patients?

Yes, the Pfizer pill is good news, but I wouldn't bet on shedding my mask anytime soon. Not for the next 6 months, at least.

We failed because we did not follow the science.

When the MINDSville cluster showed that our vaccines offered very little protection against infection and transmission of Delta in a close environment, our experts pointed to Ang Moh research and said that Pfizer still offered 90+% protection against Delta. Then that number dropped to 80%+, 70%, then dunno what.

When Chinese experts announced that the incubation period for Delta is as low as 3-5 days, I asked what was the point of once fortnightly RRT for frontline workers? 2 weeks was enough time for 3-4 generations of transmission. Our experts did not take this seriously because it was said by Chinese experts.

It was inevitable that infection will get out of control. When it hit a few hundred a day, it was clear our contract tracing will fail, and our quarantine facilities will get overwhelmed. Workplaces will be paralysed because of \"pingdemic\". So might as well transition to \"endemic living\" and home recovery, and pretend it was all planned.

And even that they managed to screw up by not redeploying medical resources quickly enough.

The only thing they did right was to open up VTL. What's the point of being anal about arrivals from other countries when our community infection rate is as high as or higher than those countries?
