I just realized that Speed is a very major (and extremely tricky) topic for Standard Math. :nailbite:

Hi, wish to know how is speed a major topic for standard math? I only knew it’s tough didn’t see it carrying heavy weight (in terms of marks) in pre-covid papers. Thanks

Of late, eg the 5 yrs PSLE Papers , at most 2 or 3 marks Mcq or short ans Qs. However, the Past year Qs, ( precovid), you still can find 4/5 marks Speed Qs.[/quote]I’m just concerned that it is a topic that’s difficult to grasp. Even if the recent trend is fewer mark allocation to Speed qns, that means the child has to spend a long amount of time working on that 2-3 mark qn for less gains. Versus a 2-3 mark qn for a simpler topic like Angles.

Speed isn’t a difficult topic, however it requires your child to “see it” by being visual. Try to draw it out, timeline/distance, to visualize it. More practice helps.

Yes the weightage on “speed” seem to have decreased in recent years. For short qn or mcq, the question isn’t complicated. It’s a necessary skill to grasp.

what I do know is every topic in P6 syllabus are fit for challenging questions and that is the reason why some students are so passionate about math and its multidimensional approach in solving problem

Just to say hello! Since PSLE is next year for my tiger child, I think it’s time I bring out the KSP in me and be more active in this chat. Hope to learn more from other wonderful KSPs here.

Still (largely) anecdotal and speculation at this point but it seems like the "incentive" response to the new scoring system has been fairly strong. I suspect the actual 2021 COPs are going to be a bit different from the 2020 Indicative COPs.

2022 PSLE may have the CLTs for Math and Science added back, although I don’t think this will change the distribution of scores much, if at all.

Will see where the dust settles in late-December…
