Hi MerlionInGermany
Will NJC still do boarding?MerlionInGermany\" post_id=\"2048395\" time=\"1637847069\" user_id=\"2964:
We have NJC at our original list, as boy likes the idea of boarding opportunity (he found out after listening to their eOpen House).
We listed it down after thinking that if we do not get into ACS(I) IP with AL7(M) in second choice (either due to balloting or COP), chances are we will not be getting into NJC in 3rd choice as well. So, decision making becomes which one to put in 2nd choice between ACS(I) IP and NJC. ACS(I) nudged in because it offers dual-track.
If i have to choose between njc and ac, I will go with ac. A bigger cohort offers more options in everything, — cca, programmes, subject combinations etc
We did not consider cohort size as part of decision making considerations. Now that you mentioned it, I think it sure has its advantage. From my unreliable research source, NJC vs ACS(I) cohort size is 200 v 400.
But, well, thank you for bringing this up.
I think you are OK to stack HCI, ACS(I), and NJC ahead of RVHS and one other safety catch all.
I hear the arguments on cohort size but have wondered how much it really matters? I can see how it makes more CCAs available but many of them are still competitive as heck to get a spot in. I suppose there is a difference in subject combinations and programmes in upper sec and this favors the larger cohorts. However, when the school is a mix of IP and O level it doesn't seem like there is much benefit then; you are still limited to the size of the IP or O level cohort respectively. At the same time, I have never heard of kids having problems of generally getting what they want at some of the split IP/O schools. Similarly, not everyone at the 400 cohort schools can get what they want in Sec 3 (if target one of the popular programs).
I've also looked at some of the standard JC subject combinations and it isn't necessarily the case that larger cohort equals more options.
So not saying it doesn't matter, but I'm not sure how much. I think the many other factors about the schools are probably more important (understanding there may be some link to cohort size).
Regardless, seems like you have many options - good luck! -

Hi Zeal Mummy
Not sure if you’ve checked out the differences between the IP-Alevels and the IP-IB. Also the distance by car/bus from your place to dover road. Some considerations, to think about.
I think rather than putting More AL11 choices, I would try to input choices with AL closer to 7-9. AL 11 is really just a safety net.
Thank you again for bringing up the IP-IB of ACS. I originally thought that IB is only an optional track, but it seems that ACS IP does not proceed to A-Level. Will definitely talk to my boy about this tomorrow.
As of Dover, it is around my office. So, I can drive & drop him in the morning, hit the gym, and work.
You are right about filling in with more AL7 - 9 in between. The thing about living in west area is that the distance of most of AL7 - 9 COP schools is not within comfortable travelling time. Threw idea of Dunman High or Catholic HIgh (both AL8) as 3rd or 4th choice to my boy, and he said that if given choice between Dunman High, Catholic High or RVHS, he will choose RV, as he can take direct bus to school.
Should have moved a little centrally ..  -

I can confirm St Nicholas and RGS are 50% in school exams which is a C6.
… I understand from another thread that Nanyang requires min of B3 as passing grade for HCL 'O' levels while RGS only requires a C6 pass? Anyone knows and can verify? How abt the passing grade for HCL at St Nicks and NJC?
And together with JAE students, you need the MOE standard of min D7 in HCL O levels to skip Chinese in JC. -

Please correct me if I am wrong, from what I know, in RI and RGS, students need to take HCL, and pass O-level HCL in order to drop Chinese in JC. (I think a pass means D7 or better)
U are referring to o level HCL. HCL is default in NYGH, however HCL is optional in RGS. But trust me, my eldest DD in RGS takes HCL, and from what I knew, I did not heard of any chinese who did not took HCL in RGS. U took o level HCL in sec 4, and if pass, there is no need for u to study Chinese in jc.crushh\" post_id=\"2048419\" time=\"1637850372\" user_id=\"2564:
Congrats on your girl's stellar results. Yes there is a possibility of balloting at RGS for AL6 but I would think there is a decent chance. Simply put, it's hard to tell how many AL6 were accepted last year and what the probability is.
I'm in similar situation but am hestiant coz I understand from another thread that Nanyang requires min of B3 as passing grade for HCL 'O' levels while RGS only requires a C6 pass? Anyone knows and can verify? How abt the passing grade for HCL at St Nicks and NJC?
Gotta choose carefully and know what our kids are in for. NYGH may not be a good fallback option if not confident in excelling in HCL.
Thanks!
If u did not took o level HCL, u still need to study Chinese as a subject in jc.
But in HCI (and most probably in NYGH), students not only need to take HCL, they need to attain a minimum score of B4 in order to drop Chinese for A-level. So if a student in HCI scores C6 in his 'O'-level HCL, he needs to take Chinese in Year 5/6, cannot drop. -
8(P). How about RVHS IP or ACS(I) at Dover for O level route? Any comments?

Hi, My DD did really well in math, and expected a better AL. We are thinking of filing for a review/appeal.
1. Do you think it is worth it?
2. By what date should we file the appeal?

At HCI,
I know HCI requires a min of B4 for HCL at 'O'-level (taken in Year 4) if the student wants to drop Chinese in Year 5/6 (and free up his time to focus on other A-level subjects). If not, the student will need to continue with Chinese lessons in Year 5/6. I think Nanyang should have a similar requirement?crushh\" post_id=\"2048419\" time=\"1637850372\" user_id=\"2564:

A1-B4: optional to take lesson in H1 CL
C5-D7: 2hr classes per week to sit for H1 CL exam end JC1
E8-F9: 4hr per week to sit for H1 CL exam end JC1
It will be same at NYGH cause they all go to HCI JC. -

Having said that, most kids who qualify for HCI/NYGH should have no issues getting the min B4 for HCL. In fact, with the SAP culture, I believe that majority of them would be getting A1/2.
So I don’t see the B4 requirement as an obstacle at all. As long as the kids don’t hate the language, they definitely can do it. -
Hello,
My kid scored AL10 and we stay in the East. We are keen to go for Anglican High or Chung Cheng, but don’t have HC. Will my kid be disadvantaged if we put either of these schools as option 1? Grateful for anyone’s guidance. Thank you. -
