Parents looking to encourage their child to read Chinese can check out the subscriptions (with age recommendations) here: https://yuyi.com.sg/blogs/news/2022-magazine-subscription

I would recommend 《少年文摘》 for Sec level students.

            Hi KiddyLow,

The options are quite few but this is by the far the best in my opinion:

You can also try looking around (friends, relatives, neighbours or even Carousell 😉) for various school's annual publications for your child's further reading too. Some of those includes:

            MGS 美苑
            Raffles Inst. 鹰的天空
            Hai Sing Catholic 海星拾贝
            Commonwealth 学耕
            SCGS 绿州
            Nan Hua High 论文集 学术幼苗计划
            CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls' 蓓蕾
            Serangoon Garden 展翅

            😉

              Hi Anyone,

Can a sec student take up HCL in his later secondary-school years for his O-levels when he was not eligible for HCL when he was at S1 due to his PSLE results?

If yes, how and when can he apply to take up the subject?

                  Yes, can.

At end of Sec 1, if your son / daughter perform well in

                  1) bu-hua (Standard Chinese)

                  And

                  2) overall,
                  including Sec 1 (English + Maths + Science + humanities ) -

he / she can appeal to the school's Chinese HOD, request to start Sec 2 (HCL), from Term 1.

                  ==========================

Alternately, your child can join certain Secondary SAP schools like

                  - Chung Cheng High (co-ed),

                  - Maris Stella High (all boys school),

if the student's PSLE AL score qualify, meet the Cut-off-point admission,

                  whereby
these 2 secondary schools' Chinese HOD enable all their Sec 1 admission students by default,
to study HCL from Sec 1, day 1 onwards,
                  because
their schools over-ride MOE HCL Eligibility letter.

                  But,
not all SAP schools in Singapore practise this, though.

                    One more important thing !

Inside your 6 choices schools for S1 posting, if your child is keen to study HCL,
                    make sure that
the school you select does offer HCL, inside the school premises compound.

                    Why ?

not All Secondary schools in Singapore, offer HCL.

Some schools only offer bu-hua (Standard Chinese) .

                    To study HCL,
their students need to go over to another Secondary school premises nearby in the afternoon, after school dismissed at 2 pm, troublesome !

                    What do you do,
if not sure whether the school (S1 posting) interested in, offer HCL ?

                    Well, simply call up
the school. Ask to speak to the Chinese HOD in charge, clarify.

                        Don't mention it, KiddyLow.

Forgot to mention this: do check out these 2 book too, they are useful for preparation on discursive writing (and the information are also relevant for email writing and oral components)
