Hi to all, tonight we are going to do our submission on sch choices.....
Previously i have also sought some advice from another thread on some sch info for my son. Great info were given, and from there we come up with this list and for any advice whether this list is deem suitable for us.
We live at north area, son achieved AL 8.
1) Cath High O level (9M)
2) Maris Stella High (12)
3) Chung Cheng Yishun (11)
4). Yishun Town (13)
5) Kuo Chuan Presbyterian (13)
6). Presbyterian High(13)
Technically, we are betting on 1st - 3rd choices only, but i would like to highlight that it is not 4th - 6th choice is anyhow choose but is out of the AL 8 score, sch in term of proximity, it is the next best/ nearest to us if we can't get 1st - 3rd choices.
Based on AL8, let says if son is not chosen for either Cath High and Maris Stella High(like very popular as heard/see in the threads that there seem to be a lot of A6/7/8(with HCL somemore) are choosing them or lower safety choice for their other choices), and knowing merit score come in play .... so we are praying should minimally get Chung Cheng Yishun right based on merit scoring too right .... unless a lot of same AL8 put as 1st and 2nd choice in Chung Cheng Yishun .... Any kind souls can advice me that is this thinking correct or wrong....
Also can i ask on any views on Cath High O lvl (9M) we choose as 1st choice(heard from some sharing, seem that Cath High only take in 20% non-affiliated which is around 30 only based on their intake yearly about 150 for Express and IP cohort respectively. The rest are all their affiliated student.), as mentioned above on AL6/7/8(HCL) vying too....is it too ambitious or we should give up so that chance is higher for next 2 choices in case tie breaker after citizenship , choices come next?

For the part highlighted in blue, if an AL 8 student lists CC Yishun as his 6th choice and another
AL10 student lists CC Yishun as his 1st choice, the student with AL8 will get into CC Yishun even though he places the school as 6th choice as academic merit comes first.
If the COP for CC Yishun is indeed AL11, that means all the students with AL8, regardless whether they list the school as 1st choice or 6th choice, will all be accepted into the school before any left over vacancies to be allocated to AL9 students and so on and so forth. COP AL11 means that the very last student accepted into the school has a PSLE score of AL11.
The same principle applies to Maris Stella. Yes, you may think it’s very popular but the COP is AL12, so the last student accepted has AL12, meaning your son will definitely get into MS with AL8 even if you were to put it as the 6th choice. -
Regarding Citizenship comes first before balloting, can someone helps to clarify:
Student A - Singapore citizen, AL8, puts SCGS as 2nd choice
Student B - PR, AL8, puts SCGS as 1st choice.
Citizenship comes first means student A will be considered first or student B? -

Student A - Singapore citizen, AL8, puts SCGS as 2nd choice
Student B - PR, AL8, puts SCGS as 1st choice.
Citizenship comes first means student A will be considered first or student B?
The one nuance here is that for SAP School HCL grade is a subset of Merit (that comes before Citizenship and Choice, at least as the first cut). -

I just want to point out that whatever indicative cop you see for any school, has already accounted for the affiliated students. So there is no need to be overly concerned to relate the effect of cop for non affiliated students in a sec school where they accept affiliated students.
Affiliated students have been acceped into the schools for decades. It is not a new thing. In fact, since psle 2019, it has even been mandated that the sec schs need to set aside a min for non affiliated students, vs before that, they could take in everyone.
So again, no need to be overly concerned about the impact of the presence of affiliated pri schools on its cop.

I am sorry for earlier calling your order of choices odd. I found them inappropriate. I believe you had your reasons to line them up as what you earlier had. Like what you just mentioned that you leave SMSS (AL11, -3 from your DD AL) for the rare chance of appealing.
1) CHIJ SJC (13)
2) TKGS (13)
3) CHIJ KC (15)
4) SMSS (11)
5) SAC (15)
6) CHIJ STC (13)
I am also not familiar with mid-range girl schools. In my personal opinion, if your DD is strongly leaning towards CHIJ (SJC) and TKGS, you can go for it.
Maybe another safety net (school with AL16 COP) at 6th choice instead of CHIJ (STC) at AL13. But that can be just me, as I am more towards plan B / plan C type of person.
With the uncertainties this year (first time AL based sec1 posting), gotta use all 6 choices wisely (although sometimes our DD/DS just have those 2-3 preferred schools), instead of placed some as fillers.
Thanks for your advice, i agree that 6 could be a better choice - the problem is there's no other girls school choice

Hi merlion in germany went to do a bit more reading up in the other thread. For CHIJ ( SJC ) the last post was in 2020 nothing new. It has been said that the environment is conducive but is not academically strong . Known notorious school back in year 2012/14 .
Both issues i have on CHIJ ( SJC ) and PHS is equally concerned . Its really such a struggle and if i were to drop these 2 schools and moved 456 up i still need another subsitute school ?

One way to analyse the balloting risk in S1 application is actually to compare the actual 2020 T-score COP against the lowest possible t-score for 2021 indicative AL COP. (or you can convert 2020 t-score to raw score and use AL COP raw score for comparison)
If 2020 t-score COP is higher than AL COP lowest possible t-score, then ballot risk will be high. And the wider the gap the higher the risk.
e.g.
2020 COP - RGS 260, RI 259, MGS 258
2021 indicative AL COP (AL6) - (Lowest possible score for AL6 is 258)
RGS 260 - 258 = +2 (high)
RI 258 - 258 = +1 (med)
MGS 258 - 258 = 0 (low)
The risk level for AL6 applicants can be ranked by high medium or low.
In my earlier example, I have highlighted the risk level of AL11 COP school with 2020 t-score COP of 244
AL11 lowest possible t-score = 224
1) Chung Cheng Main 244 - 224 = +20
2) Nan Chiau 244 - 224 = +20
3) Maris Stella 239 - 224 = +15
From this example, we can say that the balloting risk are higher for the 1 and 2

I've hardly seen students who gets over 85 or 90 marks for 3 subject and below 45 for another subject. Your example looks very extreme.

I think so. With Same point —-> citizen get the seat first not PR. if both are citizen, then the choice order counts now.
