        Hello. newbie here.

I can’t post a new question in the forum yet. But i want to ask non Chinese language parents of P6 students. Or maybe the Chinese language students as well.
I don’t know if this is exclusive to certain schools.
My girl is is taking standard Malay. When i received her booklist, i wasn’t really paying attention. I only saw "Conversational Chinese Beginner" in the ML books section. I assumed to be a typo and figured the vendor would pack the neccessary set.
When we went to collect her books, i saw it was included. Went through the booklist at home and realised the Higher ML, Standard and Higher TL has this as well. While the Standard and Higher CL has "Conversational Malay".
So is this exclusive to certain schools? My husband asked his cousin. His daughter is going to P6 as well. But she doesn’t have it in her booklist.

I think it varies by school. Regardless, I believe this will be some extra activity and won't be part of the ML subject grade. If I had to guess, time will be made during Social Studies, FTGP, etc and not the MT class. Likely, the book was associated with the MT subjects in the booklist so they could \"assign\" everyone the correct \"other\" language.

Hi, your child’s school could have plans for their P6s to learn the conversational level of another language, for fun (as enrichment). Was the book listed as an optional or compulsory item?

It is a little strange that your child’s school is doing it in P6 year. Most other schools (including my son’s) do it in P3 or P4, when the kids are not busy preparing for major exams. You can take a look at this link below for some description. For my son, it was a voluntary after-school enrichment program (10 lessons I think), no textbook was required and the Cikgu gave them some easy printed notes. The rest of the notes were copied from the board by the students. It was a fun program, my son enjoyed himself.

I thought the same about the part in bold. My older kid also did Conversational Malay in P4 (I think) whereas the current one has not done it/nothing planned for P6.

Possible her child's school plans to do it several days a week after PSLE is over. That's probably a decent time to do it along with the various other activities the schools plan for the P6s then.

It was under the compulsory items section. Yeah, maybe it could be part of their CCE or Social Studies lessons or as a replacement for FTGP(which was not in the booklist).

The book is in Chinese, though. That shuts out challenged people like me...

That is the reason why our next generation have to take CL or HCL in their school classes.

My generation already requires people to CL or HCL in school 🙂
It doesn't work in the long run. You need to be in a constant culture of Chinese for it to get embedded into your psyche.
