I thought the same about the part in bold. My older kid also did Conversational Malay in P4 (I think) whereas the current one has not done it/nothing planned for P6.
Hi, your child’s school could have plans for their P6s to learn the conversational level of another language, for fun (as enrichment). Was the book listed as an optional or compulsory item?
It is a little strange that your child’s school is doing it in P6 year. Most other schools (including my son’s) do it in P3 or P4, when the kids are not busy preparing for major exams. You can take a look at this link below for some description. For my son, it was a voluntary after-school enrichment program (10 lessons I think), no textbook was required and the Cikgu gave them some easy printed notes. The rest of the notes were copied from the board by the students. It was a fun program, my son enjoyed himself.

Possible her child's school plans to do it several days a week after PSLE is over. That's probably a decent time to do it along with the various other activities the schools plan for the P6s then. -

It was under the compulsory items section. Yeah, maybe it could be part of their CCE or Social Studies lessons or as a replacement for FTGP(which was not in the booklist).

The book is in Chinese, though. That shuts out challenged people like me...

That is the reason why our next generation have to take CL or HCL in their school classes.

My generation already requires people to CL or HCL in school

It doesn't work in the long run. You need to be in a constant culture of Chinese for it to get embedded into your psyche. -

Don't think most of the parents here will resonate well with this book as it's written from the perspective of a 陪读妈妈

I took HCL in school for 10 years, after that all “returned to teacher” and thought I’d washed my hands of it.

Who knew, gave birth to a child under AL system, was forced to refresh my CL knowledge again in order to teach my son & set a good example by walking the talk. Realized I’d never really forgotten those 10 years of language foundation. It was embedded in my brain after all. But probably not in my psyche. -

In the 80s 90s the dominant pop culture was from Hong Kong and Taiwan (four heavenly kings etc), and TVB and Channel 8 drama series are very mainstream.

Now pop culture is Korean and no suitable c-drama to watch anymore (channel 8 and Taiwan drama are all catered to older generation). So totally no conducive environment for Chinese for our kids. -

But we can speak Mandarin with our kids at home. I and my DH speak Mandarin to my step son and therefore he can read, speak and understand Chinese well.
