I have thought for a while that if there is a \"killer paper,\" it is best if it comes in your strongest subject, and that this advantage (or disadvantage if it comes in your weakest subject) is more pronounced under AL than under t-score (which was only a relative measure). Of course, this assumes that the strong and weak subjects are (somewhat?) equally distributed amongst the cohort, which may not be the case.
This is stressful! How many kids can get AL5 that allows only 1 subject to be below 90% (but still need it to be >= 85%)?
Which means that one must be a high-performing all-rounder coz every year there’ll be a killer paper or two set. Sweat!
At the end of the day, any paper can be a \"killer\" under these conditions if unfortunately you can't see the problem/solution and start pressing. And preparation wise, ex-ante there's nothing one can or should do differently. Just assume everything will be reasonably challenging and try to slog through it best you can.
But you are correct that the playbook for trying to secure a spot has changed under the two systems. Previously, if you were really good at two subjects then 90 vs. 89, 85 vs. 84, or 80 vs. 79 was not that important (on one or maybe even two other subjects). -

Your info about \"only 1 AL7D get in to NYGH\" is highly valulable, with an actual number.
Same here, my neighbor DD is AL7D, did not get in, so called up office to realise COP is AL7D, but was informed there is only 1 and last student who went in at AL7D, the rest are all AL6 and below. They aren't many students with D in HCL -

This is perfectly normal and expected for IP schools because most students' 1st choice schools will have AL COP similar to their AL scores. This is to say, student school choices are mostly driven by AL COP. ie. what is the best school I can try with my current AL.
From what I read today, seems like many IP schools conduct balloting at 1st choice (at the COP).
Very hard to say, like what one forumer shared earlier - 1st choice SCGS IP and 2nd choice Cedar IP couldn’t get in, end up 3rd choice St Nic O-levels. So very sure Cedar IP did not conduct balloting at 3rd choice else the student would have gotten in. So Cedar IP likely to have conducted balloting at either 1st choice or 2nd choice? Unless we have more data points from parents/students willing to share.
1st batch is guinea pig for the new AL system. Will take a few batches to stabilize.
And of course, there will be those AL7 who wasted their 1st choice by applying for AL6 COP schools, and end up with AL8 school choice. -

School only confirm COP is AL7 (D), not how many students with AL7 (D) or how many successful applicants with AL7 (D).

To share my DD’s scenario here - She got AL8+D with Dunman High as her 1st choice, followed by Cedar IP, TJC and St. Nicholas O. We are PR and surprisingly, she was turned down by all of her first 3 choices and only offered 4th choice as St. Nicholas O. It is quite saddening to me as I never expected that with AL8, she could not even get into an IP school nearby (unless we are willing to travel all the way from east to west to RVHS, which is so insane that I ruled it out at the very beginning).
My learning from this process is: 1) Citizenship does matter a lot in the new system 2) treat every single option in the option form seriously coz you never know where you will end up with, especially to those with AL7~9. This range turns out to be the one where balloting or tie-breakers will most likely to kick in and perform duty if I am not wrong. -

My post in this open discussion neither intended to conspire nor tarnish. It was merely to critically think if there are other criteria used to determine which Singaporean children within the same AL, same priority school choice gets their choice over all the rest, or that the many children who are on the AL COP are really just subjected to pure luck for their postings. As pointed out by Chief, it is truly a random process of ballot. No need for hostility from some members that borders on hate speech against me, really. Thanks
IMHO, one of the reasons for having AL is to reduce comparisons between parents/children and other parents/children. Computer balloting may not be random process and T scores and decimals may still be kept confidentially by authorities. Meaning within all the AL7, they will know which child had a strong AL7 (ie 7.0001) and weak AL7 (ie 7.99999). This will determine the true COP ? So, ballot is not a computer tikam process. -
Anyone know for sure where Nan Chiau High and Nan Hua High ended up? NHHS appeal form only says "11" (Indicative COP of AL11(D)).
Other schools with (historically) similar COP appear to have matched the indicative level:
-Crescent Girls = AL11 (school website)
-Chung Cheng High Main = AL11(D) (reported)
-Anglican High = AL12(P) (reported) -
Just came back from a good dinner to celebrate my daughter’s school posting. We are happy with our girl’s St Nick posting as we really like the school and it is just 3 bus stops away from our home.
On the whole idea of IP vs OP, I think perhaps MOE can set a COP for IP in the same way as Third Language, e.g. AL8. Students who meet the IP COP will be admitted to IP as long as they can find a school that offers this program. In this way, there will not be the scenario that Girl A with AL 8 gets admitted into SCGS IP while another girl with same score gets admitted into SCGS OP.
I understand some parents are trying to help explain the MOE logic and intention in this forum. But again, this is a new system, and just as parents are expected to understand and adjust to it, but shouldn’t MOE review whether there is any space for refinement?
