Hi parents


For students doing well academically, celebrate it. Credits to their parents as well. It seem doing academically well has its own set of worries too, for some. I agree IP schools offer more exposures to those ready for it. And among IP schools, some of them offer more rigorous curriculum. It will stretch those academically strong students further. So top IP schools have their attractive values. And the biggest benefits for all IP students, they get to skip common exam. And ofcourse top IP schools offer prestige and network, which is important to some.

I am suggesting to those academically strong student/parents of them, non IP schools do offers some benefits to them too. Ultimately it is up parents/student to weigh long term benefits vs level of commitments required when deciding top IP school or other IP schools, or IP vs mainstream.

I know of children who PSLE results qualify them for any secondary schools. They chose a main steam school instead. These are the observations:

- values pick up from that mainstream school. They utter this sentence: “ life is not perfect. You just have to deal with problems when they occur”. They are learning resilience.

- because they have good academic foundation, school exam are relative smooth going for them. Free time on hand to play

- get to receive Edusave award yearly. It will be very tough to get it if they go into IP schools instead because of the competition

- as for the concern non IP school will not stretch them academically as much as IP school, I observed this: ASTAR science award is awarded to academically strong students in math/science . Only a few from each school received it. And not all schools’ students receive it. The recipients are mostly from IP schools, which is logical. But some are from mainstream schools. 1 of the child from mainstream school mentioned earlier, receive the award. It shows mainstream school curriculums are not inferior to IP schools.

And quite importantly, the culture of the schools too. I know some are “competitive”, some adopt “mean doctrine”, some are “conventional”. And Teen years are formatives period for our child.


My colleague said it is a competitive world out there so it’s better to prepare our child and expose them to a competitive study environment now. But isn’t it better to work with someone who can compete, and also compromise and cooperate sometimes with you too?

I would say it is quite subjective. There is no better or worse, it's just parents' perception that \"we think\" what's best for kids. it is always ideal to be with people who are competitive and at the same time cooperative & helpful, however real life is always not perfect and we should use our experience to conclude: which one is more important for my kid.

Understand. I was trying to list down the different subgroups possible. So AL6 is not a good example.

In computer logic, you will still need to list down all the subgroups, anyway. Nothing wrong with that.

I wonder when MOE will update their School Finder website with this year’s actual COPs? Usually April/May? In time for next DSA season?


I understand most KSPs reported/called up schools for IP COPs, but I’d like to compile the non-IP schools for the rest of us mere mortals.
