Yes, similar but maybe not exactly the same. I think in the past you could make a reasonable guess as to whether one of them would catch you. If you missed both COPs then missed both. Now, technically meet both COP but due to number of students in each band you may get neither.
But wont this be the same situation before? I recall Crescent and NH cop is usually very close, like 241 and 243, thereabouts. After that it would be the 230 something schools in the same area if they are not willing to travel.
I think everyone understood at AL6 you can try RGS/RI and if ballot out you will get whatever your second choice is. I think it was less well appreciated that at AL7 and AL8 you had (possibly only) one chance at that level and if unlucky you probably missed this whole pack.
Hence, if AL8 is in the range of reasonable outcomes for your child (ie even if aiming a bit higher) better spend some time understanding O Level schools and that track.
Edit: there are probably some scenarios where you get your second choice at ALX. I.e. AL7(D) out at NYGH could still get SNGS IP. Not sure about NJC second choice. There may be some AL8 second choice at AL8 COP too. -

Absolutely understand where you come from. What I wanted to say, if I did not make it clear, is that no school will be ideal - some schools are hosting a more competitive environment and some schools are nurturing students to be cooperative and we as parents, need to weigh in and help the kids to make a choice: which one do we prefer more?
My opinion is, what is needed in real life, are people that can compete, compromise and cooperate.
As a parent I hope my children can compete, and also compromise among themselves, and cooperate with their siblings and classmate.
As a boss I hope the team can compete professionally, compromise and cooperate among themselves too to get work done.
As a citizen of our current world, I hope the
leaders not only compete , but also compromise and cooperate in area for the common good.
It is tough to learn to compete, compromise and also cooperate. But people with these qualities will be of higher value compare to someone that solely compete. And it’s tiring for people who solely compete. People who can do all 3 Cs may be the one that “change the game”. Parents are already willing to stretch their children by sending them to rigorous curriculum schools. Why not also consider spending effort cultivating the additional 2C quality.
School culture is important too for this aspect -
Order of school choice is very important under AL system. When picking school choice, it’s important not to assume there is an equal chance to get into schools of similar AL COP as vacancies available for balloting may vary from school to school.
If selecting schools with AL COP similar to AL score, it’s advisable to pick one with the highest chance as 1st choice and forget about hoping to secure 2nd choice school with similar AL COP because balloting for your 2nd choice school will likely be among "1st choice" applicants only.
How to tell which school has got the highest chance?
One way is to study the school historical t-score COP.
Schools with the highest t-score COP are likely to be the most popular and have the least chance. -

How does one explain why MGS with one of the highest t score cut off dropped to AL7 this year, and TJC with the lowest t score IP cut off improved by one AL? Let’s all just put the t score to sleep……

Hihi, not sure if this is asked earlier. May I check if any kind soul is tabulating the AL cut off, beyond the top schools? It will be useful to see the cut off ALs for the rest of the schools as well.

I think we are reading too much into AL scores and t-scores.
Perspective.
The goal here is to send our kids to the most suitable school for them, and NOT the most desired school of parents. AL-scores/t-scores is just means to that end. It’s time to close the chapter on the difference or similarity between AL-scores and t-scores and instead, focus on giving our kids the best support they can get to go through the most confusing part of their lifes - teen angst. -

There is a middle path and some schools are adopting it: encouraging students to excel and also believe in nurturing environment

The simplest explanation is that:

- MGS IB was slightly less popular this year
- TJC was slightly more popular this year
I agree, no need to read too much into things.
Who knows, next year popularity could swing +1 or -1 again depending on preferences. -

Not sure how valid is it but during the psle results release date, someone came into this forum and said MGPS did not do well this year so maybe lesser girls qualify for IP and open up more vacancies for outsiders and hence cop drops.

But MGS IP/IB does not give affiliation priority.
