Recommended English Books

I hesitate to introduce books on this topic. Seem rather gloomy & too heavy for lower primary students?

Sleepy,

at first i also think like you, find it abit bleak to introduce to yg kids. But if he has the interest,i wont deny him the chance to read it. So far he loves to read about historical events and other non-fiction stuff but i also try to balance it by getting him to read some fictions.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes, he does read the Stepping Stone series ocassionally. In fact, he just finished reading The Jungle Book.

The Andrew Lost series sounds interesting. And maybe he will like Charlie Small as well as he also likes pirates and history stuff. Will see if we can find them in the library.

My dd's top 3 favourite books are

Hi sleepy,

Wow!! Your daughter is only in primary 2 and yet she is reading
books like Kira Kira. She defintely seems way ahead for her age.
It shouldn't be a problem for her to pick up writing.

What you can do is to pick out phrases from the books
that you find are good and photocopy them or write them out in an excercise book.

Alternatively, she can have some post-its with her when
she reads and when she comes across any good phrases that can be
used in writing, she can put a post-it on that page and label that post-it
- fire, drowning etc. She can label the post-its according the the scene
being described. After she finishes the books, she can copy
down the phrases in a exercise book and group the phrases
according to the scenes. So all the 'fire' scenes are
together, the 'drowning' are together etc.

Of course, you can also buy the books from us and get the
phrases free, haha.

But ultimately, you can just make it a habit for her to copy out
the phrases after she reads and use them in her writing.

Hi sleepy,

Yes, the subject matter can be a little heavy for the lower primary kids.
But if we let them read the stories on this subject that end happily, it
is not as bad. Books like 'Number the Stars' has a happy ending and so
does not seem so heavy for the kids.

But if like what Pokemon says, your kid is interested in history, then these
books are great books to introduce them to as they will help broaden
a child's worldview.

Yes. You're right. DD has good visual-spatial skills but displayed weak auditory discrimination.

BTW, she has started the first book \"Bang, Bang, You're Dead\". This is an interesting book and she enjoys it very much. She comments that the structure of the write out really gives her some good ideas for creative writing.

My girl is in P1 this year. Any book to get her interested in reading? She doesnt like reading. I brought her to bookshop and she always choose those crossword puzzle, spot the differences etc.
