      Hi Rennie,

For Sec 1, most schools will start with 句子缩短. This will be the best way to practice and prepare for 片段缩写 (which will include identifying the relevant content to the question).

      https://i.imgur.com/JogyNA0.jpg\">

Basically, the things to note are:
      - Remove 例子 (examples), 俗语/格言/引言 (quotes), 比喻句 (simile/metaphor), 意思重复的部分 (repeated content/elaboration)
      - Remove/simplify 修饰的部分 (descriptive words/connectors): e.g. 如果/要是 --> 若;造成 --> 使/令
Oh I see, thank you so much Laoshi!

Wow, interesting! May I know if such summarizing component is tested in regular (non-Higher) Chinese (Sec 1 to Sec 4)?[/quote]
I haven't seen such component being tested for normal Express Chinese.

The usual sections tested for lower Sec are 填写汉字,词语选择,综合填空,造句,完成句子,阅读理解(选择题),阅读理解(开放式). In Upper Sec, the components will be standardized to O'Level format.

Don't mention it. Do start your child on the 250 compulsory idioms - although most schools will also start testing them in weighted assessments, most teachers do not teach them in class, usually handouts are given and students need to do self directed learning.

I created a http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1cdmgUIl8NFaEv8aSbm5xz1I4fCZSPj2 (updated on a weekly ~ biweekly basis) to share with my students videos (mainly from Channel 8 news and infotainment programmes) covering news/themes that will be useful for email writing, discursive/argument writing as well as oral discussion. Feel free to save the playlist or bookmark it and share it with your children. 😉
Lots of 网络诈骗 and 钓鱼简讯骗局 added this week 😓

There's also the 殴打/霸凌 case regarding the girls' behaviour at the multi-storey carpark.

            Hi Chen Lao Shi

            最近女中学生土霸事件,很可能是热门口试话题,你觉得,会是材料新闻作文题目吗?

                Hi sembgal,

Yeah, such topics are frequently discussed in 实用文,议论文,材料新闻 and even 口试录像会话. In fact, I touched on this topic with my students this week. 😄 This is one of the informative articles I shared with them (https://www.zaobao.com.sg/news/singapore/story20210412-1138889) .

Last year's issue 19/20 of 逗号 touched on an aspect of this topic (隐形霸凌) too. Another popular aspect of this topic that is 网络霸凌.

                Thanks, zac's mum.

前线追踪 last did an issue on this back in 2015 when no. of sch bullying cases (officially reported, of course 😓 ) escalated from 2012's 14 cases to 140 in 2014. Sad to say, with new forms like cyber bullying, these will never end...

                    1. Identify key words from the underlined sentence(note that with the exception of nouns and sometimes, verbs, these key words need to rephrased/explained in your own words)
                    2. Look at 上下文 (i.e. before and after the underlined sentence) for contextual clue
                    3. Ask yourself questions pertaining to the underlined sentence using 5W1H

Taking the 2nd underlined sentence as an example:“给漂泊异乡的我无私地送上一丝暖意”

                    - Who 给漂泊异乡的我无私地送上一丝暖意
                    - How did he/she 送上一丝暖意
                    - Why did 我 describe him/her as 无私
                    - What does 漂泊异乡 mean
                    - How did 我 feel when he/she 送上一丝暖意

                    大婶(who)带作者(who)到车站后,不但告诉他该搭几号巴士,还陪他一起等巴士并交代司机提醒他到站下车(what) ,使在外国留学(explaining 漂泊异乡)的作者感到非常感动/温馨/温暖(explaining 送上一丝暖意)。

As you would notice, a lot of the content above are from the passage (mainly the parts boxed in purple and orange). 😉

                      陈老师!

非常感谢你的帮忙!😃 actually I saw this passage in a book and wanted to asked you about why the answer provided seems so short 😂 so happy to see you using this example! Can I asked, those answer provided in the assessment not accurate is it? 😅 because it’s tough for parents (like me) to mark and correct.

                        Reenie,

别客气。Ehmm, most of the time, the suggested answers will cover the main/key points but won't be as complete as they should be (in terms of expectations in written examinations). With these main points, parents/students should be able to gauge if the train of thought is moving towards the right direction and work towards further elaboration/explanation.
