parents, can you help me understand what the DSA application form will look like?

I am trying to understand this point in moe website:"You may provide information on non-school based activities and achievements, which are related to your child’s chosen talent areas. This section is non-compulsory, with a limit of 10 entries and no supporting documents are needed."

Will the entries allow us to be descriptive, or each entry will allow us to mention one achievement?

It has been a few weeks since school started, how has the experience been for the new Year 1s? Did they have any culture shock? What do they most like and dislike about school? Could any Year 1 Parent share their child’s experience, my child has shortlisted this school as well. Thank you.
Hi Anotherday, it’s been great for my DS so far. He’s excited to be learning much more than before. The pace is rather fast and they’ve already had a couple of formative assessments. I would say, a lot of independent learning and self-revision are required on the part of the students. Be prepared for longer hours at school as well.

Hi Lavanya123, you can refer to this https://www.moe.gov.sg/-/media/files/secondary/2021/dsa-application-template-nonmainstream.docx for a sample of the application form.

There is a limit in the word count for each entry. So you basically have to list down and summarise.

Pertaining to your previous question (and another user) on the portfolio, this is not the portfolio submission. If you are shortlisted by NUSH, you will receive an email from them to submit a proper portfolio. You can include photos, or write-ups, giving more details on what you have indicated in the 10 entries for the DSA application.

As for the school choices, it is not necessary to list down 3 choices. If you only have 2 schools in mind, that’s fine.

thanks so much for your clear reply, though the url provided didt work i do have a better understanding now(luckily another parent also replied to my query about the application form 🙂 )

I am assuming you are a parent of kid in nush and asking this question, if you are comfartable answering it in the forum please do, otherwise a personal message would also be great 🙂
what do you think are the comparable choices if nush is one of the dsa a choice?
And yes i have considered putting in only two choices but still trying to see if i have not missed out any potential third choice and waste an amazing oppurtunity
Also if you can share any other insights from your dsa experience in general it would be great!

Thank you Skyea82! Does the school have a “studious” culture or a “studious but fun” culture? Are the teachers strict or casual with the kids? I cannot get a good feel of what the school culture is like. How did you or your child feel confident about choosing this school in p6?

You’re most welcome! 🙂 I would say “studious but fun”. It’s really just like any other secondary school. Haha! My boy has not met any strict teachers so far - they’re all generally very nice and treat the students like young adults, which also means no more handholding, like some teachers still do, in primary school. Teachers are mostly young and talented, with impressive background. Do keep a lookout for the school’s open house. You will be able to get a sense of how the school culture and learning environment are like.

DS had wanted to get into NUSH since he was in P3/P4. He’s always shown interest in STEM activities from young, so we gave it a shot. Worse come to worse, we could still try out other schools using his PSLE results if this had not been successful. At least we tried. Honestly, we were just really glad that he was shortlisted for an interview and given an offer. 🙂

You’re most welcome! 🙂 It’s honestly rather tough to compare as NUSH has its own curriculum and diploma. If your child is very sure that he will pursue a pathway in the Math/Science arena, then the school might be right for him. But if he wants to keep his options open, the usual IP/O Level Track schools will probably be more suitable. If you have already considered NJC, you could probably also look into HCI/RI.

For the DSA experience, I guess the important thing is to make sure that you’re applying for the correct talent area which your child is good at/has a strong interest and passion in. Interviewers do look out for that. DS has a couple of primary school classmates who may be good academically, but were not successful in their DSA application, probably because their interest/passion is not as apparent.
ok, as far as i can see its math/science but these do change with anyone, but i think it is still going to be academics i suppose, so nush will give him that since there are so many pathways possible with the nus curriculum

And yes i get the point about DSA, exactly the reason i am trying to find the right fit, he truly enjoys certain things, like when in P4 i signed him up for a math olympiad for the first time, he got hooked on to it, he seems to enjoys doing those ha ha, as for science he has always been an avid reader, reading encyclopedias since very young, and over a period it sort of naturally progressed to reading more advanced stuff like quantum physics(right now he think he is going to be a researcher), in fact at a point he ran out of books of interest in kids section at library, nowadays he borrows from adult section(histroty, geography, comics, sports will also be in the mix usually) lol
and he likes to talk about this stuff, play quiz etc., so i feel nush will have the right kind of peer group in this regard, its about the joy of learning

but then he is not a typical star student, he doesnt score consistently, partially maybe because i just left him to his own tools, no tuition, he just plays outside in the evenings, etc, so thats the reason not looking at RI kind of schools, i feel kids there will be more academically oriented in that sense where they would be very good with their exams etc,

Thank you so much for sharing. We have seen the e-open house, it is very appealing. Hence, the skepticism in me keeps wondering if it is too good to be true. I am hoping that there will be a physical open house this year. It is assuring to know that your child is happy with the school!

Your child sounds like someone that NUSH would be most interested in.
Do apply ... its the aptitude for learning, and passion to explore, that is the hallmark of the students at the school.
