DH and I and my other friends all agree that parents financing should stop when children turn 18. they are adult, at least officially…

After my A levels, I taught private tuition full time for 7 months before entering university. I earned $1200 a month and saved enough for my own pocket money throughout the 4 years of university.
My niece finished uni by giving tuition. Now. her 2 sisters are doing likewise. They didnt take any $ from their parents knowing that they don't earn much. My sil & bil are not well educated, bil was working as a storekeeper in a supermarket but their dds are very filial.

Hope my dds will be able to do likewise too. I am drooling

If parents really cannot afford it, kids will still find their own way through university. These kids may turn out to be a better person in the future.

Parents who can afford it, actually have a bigger problem of how to convince their kids to take up study loans or earn their own pocket money after 18 years old 😉

Our CPF can also be used to pay for the university fees.

After my A levels, I taught private tuition full time for 7 months before entering university. I earned $1200 a month and saved enough for my own pocket money throughout the 4 years of university. I only ate lunch in school on weekdays, all other meals at home. In fact, I continued to teach a few hours of tuition a week, even when I was in university. That was many years ago. I think young people should be able to earn a lot more teaching tuition nowadays before entering university.

Parents should not think about paying for everything for the child. After 18 years old, young people can work and earn their own money. If parents insist on paying for everything, then kids may even ask parents to buy them an apartment when they get married !
Agreed. My dad could easily pay off his 3 kids' university fees but he insisted that we must all repay back into his CPF account upon our graduation. He could afford to send us for overseas uni education but told us firmly NEVER expect him to finance our overseas edu. If we were so keen, then we had to study hard to obtain scholarships ourselves (but none of us was smart enough lah).

Since primary school, when we attended our friends' birthday parties, we had to buy the presents from our own pocket money savings. My mum would not fork out a single cent to pay for the presents. During school hols, no pocket $ was given at all. Thus, from 15 yrs old onwards, I took up temp jobs during school hols to cover my entertainment expenses, costly driving lessons etc.

I am thankful that they brought us up this way and I hope to emulate them now that I am a mother myself.

That is what I meant earlier when I said...do we as parents have to provide until 21YO and worry ourselves sick in return for kids that cannot fend well for themselves after getting a degree? Think again....the financial amount if parents really want to think about...it's not 350k, it's what you can earn up to the time your child needs to go uni....there is no need to overwork and provide. I think children have more to lose when their parents die from overwork to get all these finances in place.

                    For the children,
                    吃得苦中苦,方为人上人.
